Chapter 9 - The Trial of Evelyn Sullivan

Three months later.

Winter had settled over Chicago, covering the city in a thick blanket of pristine white snow.

Inside the Federal District Courthouse, the high-profile trial of Evelyn Sullivan and former CFO Marcus Thorne reached its dramatic climax.

Evelyn sat at the defense table, stripped of her mink stoles and diamond jewelry, wearing a plain gray prison jumpsuit. The evidence uncovered by our audit team was undeniable: bank wire transfers, forged signatures, and offshore account records directly linked her to the theft of twenty-four million dollars.

Ethan took the witness stand.

Wearing a sharp black suit, he sat tall and composed in the wooden witness box, looking directly at the federal judge.

"Mr. Sullivan," the prosecutor asked, "did you ever authorize your mother to transfer corporate funds to accounts in the Cayman Islands?"

"Never," Ethan answered clearly, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "For ten years, I trusted my mother implicitly. I allowed her to manipulate my personal life, destroy my marriage, and alienate me from my children under the false pretense of 'protecting the family.' I was blind. But the financial records do not lie. She systematically defrauded this company and betrayed every person who trusted her."

From the defense table, Evelyn suddenly jumped to her feet, her face contorted in rage.

"You ungrateful coward!" she shrieked at her own son. "I built you! I made you a billionaire! You sacrificed your own mother for that cheap girl and her bastard children!"

The judge slammed his wooden gavel down hard. CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!

"Order in the court! Defendant will sit down immediately or be held in contempt!"

Ethan didn't look away from her. He looked at his mother with absolute, unwavering calm.

"Those children are Sullivans," Ethan said softly, his voice carrying over the sound of the gavel. "And unlike you, they represent everything good about this family."

An hour later, the jury returned with a unanimous verdict: GUILTY on all twelve counts of federal wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement.

Evelyn Sullivan was sentenced to twelve years in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of early parole.

As the marshals led her away in handcuffs, she looked back at Ethan one last time, begging for help with her eyes. Ethan simply turned his back, walking over to where I sat in the gallery with Noah and Sophie.

He took Sophie into his arms, lifting her up onto his hip, while placing a loving hand on Noah’s shoulder.

The shadow that had hung over our lives for ten long years was finally, completely gone.
