Chapter 61 - An Unholy Alliance

"Victoria! Get out of there!" Ethan screamed through the comms, his fists slamming against the reinforced glass of the vault in London.
"Stay calm, Ethan," I forced my voice to remain steady, even as heavily armed men in dark suits stepped out of the SUVs, weapons raised toward our van.
Marcus pulled a concealed firearm from under his seat, but I held up my hand to stop him. "No shooting. Not here. We play the card they never saw coming."
I pressed a button on my private phone, dialing an encrypted line to the Federal Correctional Complex in Virginia, USA.
"Connect me to inmate 88492," I said calmly into the phone. "Genevieve Sterling."
Three seconds later, Genevieve's raspy, bitter voice came through the line. "Victoria Vance. Calling me from your deathbed?"
"Genevieve, your family was betrayed by The Vanguard just like mine was," I said rapidly, watching the armed men surround our vehicle outside. "Lord James Vance took your family's assets after you were arrested. Give me the override codes to the Mayfair building's master grid, and I will ensure your sentence is commended to house arrest."
A heavy pause echoed over the line. Then, Genevieve chuckled—a dark, venomous sound. "Lord James ruined my life. The override code is 9-9-4-1-Delta. Now burn them to the ground, Victoria."
I typed the code into Marcus’s terminal.
BOOM!
The entire electrical grid of the Mayfair skyscraper short-circuited! The blast doors in the vault unlocked, and the armed mercenaries outside our van were thrown into total confusion as the streetlights and security cameras failed simultaneously.

"Ethan, move now!" I shouted into the comms.
Ethan burst out of the vault, snatching the obsidian hard drive, and vaulted through the darkness toward the emergency stairwell, escaping into the London night before The Vanguard could realize what had hit them.
