Chapter 42 - Home Forever

As twilight painted the Chicago sky in breathtaking shades of deep violet, rose, and gold, the guests departed, leaving our family gathered together on the private wooden dock.

Noah and Sophie sat at the edge of the dock, dangling their feet over the calm water, sharing the last piece of chocolate cake, their laughter floating softly across the lake.

Ethan sat beside me on the vintage wooden bench, holding my hand tightly, our fingers intertwined. In his other hand, he held a new framed photograph taken an hour ago—showing Noah, Sophie, Ethan, and me standing together under the birthday banner, smiling brightly, with nothing but open blue sky behind us.

"Thirty dollars brought you to my doorstep ten years ago," Ethan said softly, his blue eyes filled with an endless, unconditional love that touched the very depths of my soul. "And I will spend the rest of my life making sure you know that you are my world, my Chairwoman, and my home."

I leaned up, pressing my lips gently against his in a sweet, passionate, unhurried kiss under the glittering evening stars.
