Chapter 44 - The Chairwoman’s Counter-Strike

The red digital clock on my study desk read 3:15 AM. The air in the mansion was heavy, thick with the stench of betrayal and unresolved questions. Upstairs, Noah and Sophie were fast asleep, guarded by four of my most trusted personal security officers—men who had bled with us in the early days before the Sterling name carried billions.
I stood before the floor-to-ceiling glass window, watching the dark, tranquil waters of Lake Michigan. Three hours ago, Ethan’s hand was warm in mine. Now, he was locked in a gold-plated cage in Europe, forced into a sham marriage with Genevieve Sterling to protect our children.
"They think I'm going to hide," I whispered to the empty room. "They think I'm going to cry."
I turned on my heel and walked toward the hidden steel safe behind the painting of Chicago's skyline. I pressed my thumb against the biometric scanner. The heavy door clicked open with a satisfying metallic hiss.
Inside lay three things: a black leather ledger containing the untraceable financial accounts Ethan and I established during our first year of building Sterling-Vance, an encrypted satellite phone, and a small, silver-plated flash drive marked with the initials E.V.
Ethan had left this flash drive for me five years ago, telling me: "If the day ever comes when they cut off my head, this is the knife you use to cut off theirs."
I plugged the drive into my secure terminal. The screen flickered to life, requiring a 32-character decryption key. I didn't hesitate. I typed in the exact date and time Ethan walked onto my doorstep ten years ago with thirty dollars in his pocket.
ACCESS GRANTED.
A avalanche of files flooded the screen. Shell companies, secret offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, Swiss vault numbers, and—most importantly—the real financial registry of the Sterling Syndicate.
Genevieve Sterling’s empire wasn't as bulletproof as she claimed on television. She was bleeding cash. The press conference in Geneva was a desperate illusion, designed to force a panic-sell of Sterling-Vance shares at morning bell so her shadow syndicate could buy controlling interest for pennies on the dollar.
My phone on the desk chimed with a encrypted signal. I picked it up immediately.
"Chairwoman," a dark, rasping voice spoke through the scrambler. It was Vance, my Chief of Special Intelligence and the only man who knew where the bodies were buried. "Genevieve’s team just filed an emergency motion with the Federal Trade Commission in Washington. They are alleging your original marriage certificate with Ethan was forged in Nevada eight years ago. If the court grants a temporary injunction at 9:00 AM, your voting rights as primary shareholder will be frozen instantly."
"They're moving faster than expected," I said, my voice as cold as liquid nitrogen. "Where is Genevieve right now?"
"She’s hosting a private victory gala at the St. Regis in Manhattan tonight. The shadow board members are all there. Ethan is being held under house arrest in the penthouse suite under maximum security."
"Prepare the Gulfstream," I commanded, staring at my reflection in the dark glass. "We fly to New York in twenty minutes."

"Chairwoman, going to Manhattan is walking straight into their kill zone. If Genevieve realizes you're in the city—"
"Genevieve thinks she played a pawn," I interrupted, my eyes flashing with a dangerous light. "She has no idea she just invited the Queen onto her chessboard. Get the plane ready, Vance. Tonight, we rewrite the rules."
