Chapter 45 - The Trojan Horse

The rain in Manhattan fell in relentless, icy sheets, reflecting the neon glow of Wall Street against the wet asphalt. By 5:00 AM, the Manhattan sky was still pitch black, but inside the grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel, the party was in full swing. Champagne flowed from crystal towers, and the elite brokers of global finance laughed under massive chandeliers, celebrating what they believed was the final execution of Victoria Vance.

Disguised in an elegant, obsidian velvet gown with a lace veil partially obscuring my features, I slipped through the VIP entrance using a forged diplomatic press pass provided by Vance.

My heart hammered against my ribs, but my steps were slow, deliberate, and commanding. Across the room, standing near the marble balcony, was Genevieve Sterling. She looked radiant, drinking Dom Pérignon, surrounded by six heavy-set bodyguards in tailored tuxedos.

And standing beside her, looking like a ghost of the man I loved, was Ethan.

His dark hair was slicked back, his expression blank, but I saw the subtle strain in his jaw. His left wrist was subtly tethered to a biometric tracker hidden beneath his cufflink.

I positioned myself behind a marble column, taking out a small RF-jamming device hidden in my evening clutch. With a soft click, I activated it.

Across the room, Ethan’s head snapped up.

He felt the frequency shift. It was a tactical signal we had developed years ago—a faint, high-frequency pulse designed to disrupt localized electronic monitoring. His sharp blue eyes scanned the grand ballroom, darting from face to face until they locked onto mine behind the veil.

For a split second, the mask of cold detachment slipped from his face. Panic, fierce devotion, and raw fear flashed through his eyes. He shook his head imperceptibly, giving me a silent warning: Get out.

I didn't move. Instead, I raised my glass slightly toward him in a silent promise: We stand together.

Suddenly, the grand doors of the ballroom slammed shut. The ambient chatter died down instantly.

A man walked toward the central podium. He was elderly, dressed in a sharp three-piece suit, walking with a silver-topped cane. Lord Archibald Sterling—Genevieve’s father and the ruthless mastermind behind the Board of Shadows.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Archibald’s booming voice echoed through the microphone. "Tonight we celebrate the unification of two great dynasties. Sterling-Vance is no more. By 9:00 AM, the courts will dissolve Victoria Vance's control, and all North American assets will be liquidated into the Sterling Syndicate!"

The crowd erupted into applause. Genevieve smiled, leaning in to press a kiss against Ethan’s cheek. Ethan didn't flinch, but his eyes never left mine.

"However," Archibald continued, raising his hand for silence. "Before we sign the final transfer papers, there is a small matter of an anonymous bidder who has just placed a six-billion-dollar short option against our syndicate stock from a private vault in Chicago."

A cold whisper rippled through the room.

Genevieve’s smile faltered. "Father, that's impossible. Nobody has that kind of liquidity without our clearance."

"Oh, but I do," I said, stepping out from behind the marble column, my voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom as I pulled back my lace veil.

The room gasped. Security guards immediately reached for their jackets. Ethan took a sudden step forward, his voice raw with desperation: "Victoria, no!"
