Chapter 43 - The Illusion of Forever

The gentle lapping of Lake Michigan against the wooden pilings of our private dock had sounded like a lullaby just hours earlier. I can still feel the lingering warmth of Ethan’s lips against mine, the crisp Chicago autumn air scented with pine and lake water, and the innocent laughter of Noah and Sophie echoing across the water as they shared the last slice of chocolate cake.

For ten years, we had fought for this peace. When I first met Ethan, he was a mysterious stranger standing on my doorstep with thirty dollars in his pocket and a shattered past. I took a chance on him. Together, we clawed our way up from the ruthless underbelly of corporate Chicago, overthrowing corrupt boards, dismantling hostile takeovers, and building a multi-billion-dollar empire from the ground up. I became the Chairwoman of Sterling-Vance Enterprises; he became the brilliant strategist who guarded my back against every corporate assassin in the city.

Or so I thought.

"Mommy? Is Daddy still on TV?"

Seven-year-old Sophie’s voice cut through the heavy silence of the living room. She was curled under a thick, knitted blue blanket, holding her stuffed rabbit tightly, her wide hazel eyes darting from the glowing screen to me. Next to her, nine-year-old Noah sat upright, his jaw clenched in a way that made him look terrifyingly like his father.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. My breath caught in my throat.

On the screen, broadcast live from a high-security summit in Geneva, Switzerland, stood Ethan. But this wasn't the man who had held my hand on the vintage bench an hour ago. The man on the screen wore a bespoke midnight-blue suit that cost more than my first car, his posture rigid, his expression an impenetrable mask of cold, calculating authority.

"The merger between Sterling-Vance and the Sterling Global Syndicate is absolute," Ethan's deep, baritone voice resonated through the state-of-the-art surround sound system. "Effective immediately, control of all North American assets transfers to my primary partner and wife, Lady Genevieve Sterling."

A camera angle shifted. Standing right beside him, draped in emerald diamonds and an icy, triumphant smile, was Genevieve Sterling—the untouchable heiress of the European banking dynasty we had supposedly crushed into bankruptcy six months ago.

Wife.

The word echoed in my skull, deafening and surreal.

"Mom," Noah whispered, his voice trembling with a fierce, protective anger. "Why did the man on TV call that lady his wife? Where is Daddy? Did the bad guys take him?"

I forced my facial muscles to move, pasting on a terrifyingly calm smile for my children's sake, even as my internal organs felt like they were dissolving in acid. "It's a mistake, sweetie. Just a corporate broadcast glitch. Daddy is... Daddy is downstairs in his study. Let me go check on him."

I stood up, my legs feeling like lead. Every step toward Ethan’s private study felt like walking through a minefield. The heavy mahogany door was unlocked—uncharacteristically unlocked. Ethan always locked his study when working on high-level encryption files.

I pushed the door open.

The room was pitch black except for the pale moonlight cutting through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The desk was immaculate. Every single framed photograph of our family—the ones from our vacations in Aspen, our wedding anniversary in Santorini, and the one taken just hours ago under the birthday banner—had been turned face down.

On top of my leather executive chair sat a single, pristine white envelope. Embossed in heavy gold foil was a crest I hadn't seen in a decade: The Sterling Syndicate.

My trembling fingers picked up the envelope and tore it open. Inside was a single sheet of heavy parchment paper, scrawled in Ethan’s precise, razor-sharp handwriting:

Victoria, If you are reading this, the contingency has been triggered. Do not look for me. Do not call my phone. To protect you, Noah, and Sophie from the Board of Shadows, I had to walk back into the fire. The empire we built was never enough to keep them off our doorstep. Genevieve holds the antidote, and I am the ransom. Run. — Ethan.

Before I could even process the words, my phone buzzed violently on the desk. A video call from an encrypted, untraceable satellite frequency.

With shaking hands, I swiped to accept.

The screen flickered, revealing the luxurious penthouse suite overlooking the snowy Swiss Alps. Ethan filled the frame, but his hands were cuffed to a steel armrest bolted to the chair. A thin line of blood trickled down his temple. Standing behind him, resting her manicured hand on his shoulder like a prize trophy, was Genevieve.

She leaned down, her lips brushing Ethan’s ear before she looked directly into the camera lens, her emerald eyes gleaming with malicious triumph.

"Hello, Chairwoman," Genevieve purred, her voice dripping with venomous amusement. "Did you enjoy your little birthday party? How touching. How domestic. But playtime is over. Your husband belongs to me now, and tomorrow morning, the Board of Shadows votes to strip you of every single share you own. If you so much as breathe out of turn, Ethan takes the fall for treason, and your children become orphans. Choose wisely."

The screen went black.

The silence in the room was absolute. Down the hall, I could hear Noah and Sophie whispering. I looked down at the ring on my finger—the simple silver band Ethan had bought me with his last thirty dollars ten years ago.

They thought they had broken us. They thought they could steal my husband, my empire, and my family.

They had no idea who they were dealing with. I wasn't just a mother protecting her cubs. I was the Chairwoman of Sterling-Vance, and I was about to wage total war.
