Chapter 6 - The Broken Line

The cozy warmth of the apartment vanished instantly, shattered by Evelyn’s shrill, piercing voice.
Sophie gasped, shrinking back behind Ethan, while Noah instinctively stepped in front of his sister, his small fists clenching at his sides.
Ethan stood up slowly from the hardwood floor. His posture didn't reflect the panicked billionaire from the night before. His shoulders squared, his chest expanded, and a dark, terrifying calmness settled over his features—a look I had never seen on him before.
"Mother," Ethan said, his voice dangerously quiet. "How did you find this address?"
"I hired a private investigator the moment you left your house!" Evelyn declared, stepping deeper into our small living room, her eyes darting disgustedly over our modest furniture. "Look at this dump! They live in squalor, Ethan! She's using these children as leverage to drag you down to her level! I brought security to remove you before the press captures images of you in this... this hovel!"
The photographer lifted his camera, clicking three rapid shots of Ethan standing next to me and the twins.
SNAP! SNAP! SNAP!
Before the photographer could lower the lens, Ethan lunged forward. He snatched the five-thousand-dollar camera directly out of the man's hands, raised it high over his head, and slammed it down onto the hardwood floor with terrifying force.
CRASH!
Plastic, glass, and memory cards exploded across the entryway.
The two security guards took an instinctive step back, terrified by the sudden, volcanic fury radiating from their employer.
"Ethan!" Evelyn shrieked, clutching her pearl necklace. "Have you lost your mind?!"
"No, Evelyn," Ethan said, stepping up to his mother until he was towering over her, his eyes blazing with pure, unadulterated hatred. "For ten years, I lost my mind. I listened to your lies. I let you poison my heart against the only woman who ever loved me for who I was, not for my money. I let you erase my flesh and blood!"
"I did it for your future!" Evelyn screamed back, her aristocratic facade crumbling into ugly, frantic rage. "She was a nobody! A low-class nobody from South Chicago! You deserved a woman from royalty! A woman who could elevate our family name!"
"Our family name is mud!" Ethan roared, his voice shaking the framed pictures on the walls. "Because of you, I am known as the monster who threw his pregnant wife into the street! Because of you, I missed my children's first steps, their first words, their first days of school!"
Ethan reached into his back pocket, pulled out his wallet, and extracted a sleek black titanium card—his primary executive access key to Sullivan Group's financial holdings.
He tossed it onto the floor at Evelyn’s feet.
"You love money so much, Mother?" Ethan whispered, his tone dropping into a cold, terrifying promise. "Take it. Take the company. Take the mansion. Take the cars. Effective immediately, I am resigning as CEO of Sullivan Group. I am transferring my voting shares to a private trust managed exclusively by Claire."
Evelyn went pale, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "You... you can't do that! The board will destroy you! The stock will collapse!"
"Let it burn," Ethan said softly. "I'd rather be a broke father in a small apartment than a billionaire living in your golden cage."
He turned to the two security guards. "Get her out of my sight before I have you both arrested for criminal trespass."
The guards, realizing who paid their ultimate paychecks, didn't hesitate. They gently but firmly grabbed Evelyn’s arms, pulling her backward out of the apartment as she screamed, cursed, and cried into the hallway.
The door slammed shut.
Silence returned to the room.
Ethan stood near the entryway, his shoulders slumping, his chest heaving as he stared down at the shattered camera pieces on the floor.

He slowly turned around to look at us, looking completely exposed, vulnerable, and exhausted.
"I'm sorry, Claire," he whispered, tears streaming down his face. "I won't let her hurt you ever again."
