Chapter 14 - The Lie That Shattered Ten Years

The silence in the dining room was deafening. The only sound was the faint hum of the air conditioning unit and the heavy, ragged breathing coming from Ethan's chest.

Sophie looked between us, her young face filled with terror. "Mommy? What is the bad man on TV saying? What does he mean Noah isn't Dad's son?"

Noah stood frozen near the edge of the table. His arms dropped to his sides. The confident, brilliant young man who had been presenting his business plan moments ago looked like a frightened toddler. He looked slowly at me, his brown eyes filled with a heartbreaking, silent agony.

"Mom?" Noah whispered, his voice cracking. "Is... is he lying?"

I couldn't breathe. My throat felt like it was filled with broken glass. I turned to look at Ethan, waiting for him to bark into his communicator, to laugh off the ridiculous claim, to tell our son that Julian was playing sick psychological games.

But Ethan didn't look at Noah. He stared straight at the black screen of the television as the broadcast cut off, his jaw tight, his eyes burning with an unbearable, heavy guilt.

"Ethan..." I choked out, stepping around the table, grabbing his forearm. "Tell him. Tell Noah he's your son!"

Ethan slowly turned his head to look at me. A single tear escaped his eye, tracing a path down his cheek.

"Ten years ago..." Ethan whispered, his voice barely audible, "when I was forced into that arranged marriage with the Harrington heiress by my father... I didn't just throw you out into the rain, Clara. I was paralyzed by fear. My father threatened to destroy the fertility clinic where your frozen embryos were stored... but before that... he had swapped the donor records."

"What are you saying, Ethan?!" I shrieked, pulling my hand back as if I had been burned.

"Noah was born from the secondary donor line," Ethan confessed, his voice breaking into a ragged sob. "The Vance bloodline mandate... my father set it up so that if you ever came back, Noah couldn't legally inherit the trust. Julian holds the master DNA index. He’s held it for ten years."

Noah took three steps backward, knocking his dining chair over with a loud, echoing crash. "All this time... you let me believe I was your blood... you let me call you Dad..."

Before Ethan could reach out, Noah turned and sprinted out the rear glass doors into the pitch-black rain.
