Chapter 118 - The Bloodline Ledger

The warm, amber glow of our living room fireplace usually offered total sanctuary. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, Lake Michigan rested like a sheet of dark glass under the clear autumn sky. Seven-year-old Sophie was curled tightly against my side under a heavy blue knitted blanket, her small fingers clutching her plush bunny. Next to her, nine-year-old Noah sat leaning against Ethan’s shoulder on the oversized sectional sofa, his eyes heavy with sleep as a family movie played on the flat-screen TV.

Ethan reached over, wrapping his broad hand around mine, his thumb softly stroking my knuckles. On the marble coffee table sat the new framed photograph taken just two days ago—showing Noah, Sophie, Lily, Marcus, Veronica, Ethan, and me smiling under the summer pavilion.

"You're very quiet tonight, Victoria," Ethan murmured softly, his baritone voice sending a comforting warmth through my chest.

"I was just thinking," I smiled, looking into his deep blue eyes. "For ten years, every time a shadow crossed our doorstep, we had to prepare for war. But looking at our children tonight... I finally feel like we can breathe."

Ethan leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss against my temple. "The war is over, my Chairwoman. We built something nobody can touch."

Then, the television screen flickered violently.

The movie audio cut into high-pitched static, replaced instantly by an emergency broadcast graphic: BREAKING GLOBAL SPECIAL REPORT.

"We interrupt regular programming for a shocking international development," the news anchor announced, his tone grave and urgent. "An unsealed federal petition filed simultaneously in Washington D.C. and Paris has accused Victoria Vance, Chairwoman of Sterling-Vance Enterprises, of international child trafficking and black-market identity forgery."

"What on earth?" Ethan muttered, sitting upright as his brow furrowed in anger. He grabbed the remote, turning up the volume.

"The petition was filed by Count Dominic Sterling-Vance," the reporter continued, "the long-presumed-dead elder brother of late syndicate boss Archibald Sterling. Count Dominic claims that Noah and Sophie Vance are his biological offspring, unlawfully taken from a private European sanctuary ten years ago."

The screen cut sharply to a press briefing outside the Interpol headquarters in Paris.

Standing behind a row of microphones was a man in his late fifties, wearing an immaculate double-breasted charcoal suit. His face was weathered, his dark eyes cold as ice, and a prominent dragon crest ring glinted on his right hand.

"Good evening," Dominic spoke into the cameras, his accent deep, aristocratic, and chillingly controlled. "For ten years, Victoria Vance and Ethan Vance presented themselves as righteous guardians. But the truth is simple: my children were stolen from my estate during the European coalition collapse. Victoria Vance forged their birth certificates using thirty dollars and illegal syndicate connections."

He held up a heavy leather-bound document stamped with a blood-red wax seal.

"I have officially requested federal custody warrants," Dominic added with a sinister smile. "By 8:00 AM tomorrow, Victoria Vance's parental rights will be permanently suspended."

"Mommy...?" Sophie's frightened voice whimpered as she sat up, burying her face in my sweater. "Is that bad man going to take us away?"

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. My breath hitched in my throat as cold sweat broke out across my back.

Ethan stood up in one swift, explosive movement, his eyes blazing with a lethal, protective fury. "Noah, take your sister upstairs to her room right now. Lock the door and stay with the guards."

"Ethan..." I gasped, standing on trembling legs as the kids hurried up the stairs. "Dominic was supposed to be dead! Archibald confirmed his plane crashed in the Swiss Alps five years ago!"

"He faked his death to let us clear out Archibald, Genevieve, and the old syndicate board," Ethan growled, his hands clenching into tight fists. "He waited for us to bring the company to a sixty-billion-dollar valuation... so he could use the kids to hijack control of the primary trust!"

My phone on the table buzzed violently with a private satellite alert.

I picked it up with shaking hands. The message on the screen read:

“Thirty dollars got Ethan into your life, Chairwoman. But sixty million dollars won’t buy back your children. Hand Noah and Sophie over by midnight, or watch your empire crumble from inside a federal prison.”

Down the driveway, the security intercom chimed—a red flashing alert indicating three blacked-out SUVs had just pulled up outside our gated entrance.

The ghosts were back. And this time, they were coming for our children.
