Chapter 122 - The Red Dot on the Lapel

The air in the Grand Palais de Justice ballroom was thick with vintage champagne, expensive floral arrangements, and the quiet, predatory hum of Europe’s wealthiest dynasties.

Dominic’s jaw remained rigid, the muscles along his cheekbone twitching like severed wires. The ruby-red dot dancing over the silk lapel of his tailored Brioni tuxedo didn't waver. It was steady, cold, and calibrated by Ethan Vance—a former special activities sniper who had spent twelve years turning high-value targets into distant memories before he ever wore a bespoke suit beside me.

"You're bluffing, Victoria," Dominic whispered through teeth bared in a strained, socialite smile. His fingers trembled so violently against his crystal flute that champagne splashed over his signet ring. "There are three hundred foreign ambassadors and Swiss federal magistrates in this hall. Your husband wouldn't risk an international diplomatic slaughter."

"Ethan doesn't negotiate with human traffickers, Dominic," I replied, taking a slow sip from my glass, my emerald earrings brushing against my collarbones. "And in the eyes of Interpol, that is precisely what you become the moment Marcus transmits the decoded ledger from your master server to the magistrate's desk."

High above us, the stained-glass dome of the grand hall depicted the Archangel Michael casting down the serpent. Silhouetted against the dark Genevan sky, visible through the clear leaded panes, Ethan shifted his position on the maintenance catwalk eighty feet above the marble floor.

The red beam drifted from Dominic's lapel to the center of his forehead.

A drop of sweat broke across Dominic’s weathered hairline, tracking slowly down his temple. "If I fall, my men on the perimeter have orders. The chalet in Gstaad isn't the only property under surveillance. Your children—"

"Noah and Sophie were moved from the villa three hours ago, Count," I interrupted, stepping in close enough that the scent of my jasmine perfume overpowered the burning smell of his fear. "They are currently aboard a French naval transport cruising in international waters off Cherbourg, escorted by two tactical squads from the 1st Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment. You have no hostages. You have no leverage. You only have ten seconds to decide whether you want to walk out of this hall in handcuffs or in an aluminum transport case."

Before Dominic could stammer another syllable, the chime in my inner-ear monitor sounded twice.

"Extraction corridor is green, Victoria," Ethan’s voice cut through the static, cool and low, the familiar gravel in his baritone sending a wave of absolute calm down my spine. "Swiss Federal Police tactical units have just breached the outer gates. The rat has nowhere to scurry. Walk toward the western portico."

I offered Count Dominic Sterling-Vance a breathtaking, pitiless smile.

"Keep the glass, Dominic," I said softly. "You'll need something to remember what freedom tasted like."

I turned my back on him.

The silk train of my sapphire gown swept across the marble tiles as I glided through the parting crowd of aristocrats, ambassadors, and corporate titans. Nobody moved to stop me. Nobody dared breathe too loudly.

Behind me, the heavy bronze double doors of the grand foyer burst open with a concussive bang, followed by the synchronized roar of boots:

"Police fédérale! Personne ne bouge! Mains sur la tête!"

I didn't turn around to watch the handcuffs click around Dominic's wrists.

I walked straight out into the freezing Alpine night air, down the sweeping limestone stairs toward the idling black Maybach where Ethan was already rappelling down the exterior service line, ready to take back our children and burn the Sterling-Vance syndicate to the ground.
