Chapter 34 - Ambush in the Fog

Before Ethan could pull me into his arms, a sudden metallic CLICK echoed through the stone basement.
The heavy iron vault doors behind us slammed shut with a deafening crash, locking automatically from the outside.
Over the vault’s vintage intercom system, a familiar, smooth voice chuckled coldly.
"Did you really think I would leave Dr. Thorne’s records unguarded, dear sister?" Vivian’s voice rasped through the speaker. "I knew you would come to Switzerland for the journal. You always were so predictable, Clara."
"Vivian!" Ethan roared, stepping in front of me, drawing his sidearm and aiming it at the reinforced glass observation panel above the vault. "Open these doors!"
"Why would I do that?" Vivian laughed through the speaker. "The vault is hermetically sealed. The oxygen reserves will last approximately ninety minutes. By the time my security team opens those doors to clear out your bodies, the seventy-two-hour statute of limitations in Illinois will have passed."
Through the reinforced glass panel above, Vivian appeared, dressed in a black rain coat, holding the master override keyfob. Standing beside her were three heavily armed mercenaries.
"You won't get away with this, Vivian!" I screamed, slamming my hands against the thick glass. "The court will demand the real DNA test!"

"The judge in Cook County has already received my swab sample," Vivian smiled coldly. "With you dead in Switzerland, Ethan’s corporate estate passes automatically to the legal guardian of his children. Me. Goodbye, Clara."
Vivian turned and pressed the red button on the master keyfob, disabling the vault’s ventilation system entirely.
