Chapter 80 - A Mother’s Fury

Before Veronica could answer, the heavy double doors of the conservatory burst open!
Four of Cross's senior mercenaries rushed into the room, weapons drawn. But before they could fire, Marcus and a team of federal agents from the Internal Revenue Service and FBI—who had been secretly briefed by Marcus with Dr. Chen's signed confession—swarmed the room from the main foyer!
"FBI! Drop your weapons! Hands in the air!"
Shouts, screams, and chaos erupted through the grand ballroom as wealthy guests scattered in panic!
Harrison Cross, despite his broken wrist, kicked Ethan’s leg and broke free, lunging toward the glass doors leading out to the terrace. "Veronica! The helicopter! NOW!"
Veronica snapped out of her shock, grabbed a heavy bronze statue from a side table, and threw it through the glass window, shattering the glass doors! She and Cross sprinted out onto the lawn toward the private helipad where a black twin-engine helicopter was revving its rotors!
"Victoria, stay here!" Ethan shouted, giving chase.
"Not a chance!" I kicked off my high heels, grabbed a tactical flashlight from a disarmed guard on the floor, and sprinted out onto the wet grass right behind my husband!
Down near the dock, near the helipad, Noah and Sophie's favorite wooden bench stood illuminated under the moonlight. Cross reached the helicopter first, pulling himself into the cabin, while Veronica scrambled up the boarding steps.
"Veronica!" I screamed over the deafening roar of the helicopter blades.

Veronica turned, looking down at me with pure, unadulterated hatred. "I should have killed you thirty years ago!"
"You had thirty years to build a life, Veronica!" I shouted, standing firm on the lawn as the wind from the rotors whipped my hair wildly around my face. "Instead, you let a monster turn you into his puppet!"
