Chapter 28 - The Shadow in the Frame

The quiet breeze rustling through the oak trees suddenly felt icy. My thumb brushed over the smooth glass of the small framed photo Ethan had just handed me. It was supposed to be a innocent keepsake—a picture taken on our porch that afternoon showing Noah, Sophie, Ethan, and me standing together, unbroken and free.

"Clara? What's wrong?" Ethan asked softly, feeling the sudden, violent tremor running through my body. He shifted his posture on the wooden dock, his arm tightening around my waist. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

I couldn't speak. I brought the photo up to my eyes under the pale moonlight, staring intently at the top left corner of the wooden porch railing in the background.

Standing near the treeline behind our estate house, half-hidden by the autumn leaves, was a woman dressed in a tailored cream trench coat. Her dark hair was pulled back into a sleek bun, her sharp profile illuminated by the afternoon sun.

It was my face.

Not a resemblance. Not a coincidence. It was the exact facial structure, the same arched eyebrows, the same distinct jawline that I saw in the mirror every morning.

"Clara?" Ethan leaned down, his brow furrowing as he looked down at the photograph. His blue eyes widened in absolute shock as he spotted the figure standing near our home. "Who... who is that?"

"My twin sister, Vivian," I whispered, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. "She... she drowned when we were ten years old in Lake Erie. We held a memorial service for her, Ethan. I watched her casket sink into the vault."

Before Ethan could answer, the screen of his encrypted satellite phone flared to life in his pocket. It wasn't a standard call—it was a priority notification from the Cook County Chancery Court digital portal.

Ethan unlocked the screen. Attached to the court summons was a high-resolution PDF document stamped with an urgent judicial seal:
