Chapter 107 - Under Fire

The storm over Connecticut raged with fierce violence. Sheets of ice-cold rain lashed against the high stone walls of Dr. Harrison Vance’s secluded estate in Greenwich.
Ethan and Marcus moved through the dark, rain-soaked woods surrounding the perimeter. Their tactical night-vision scopes illuminated two guards patrolling the rear terrace.
"Sensors are active," Marcus whispered into the comms. "Alexander didn't just place Dr. Vance here—he locked him in a golden cage."
Ethan didn't hesitate. Moving with silent, predatory precision, he neutralized the outer guards before they could raise an alarm. With a swift bypass of the electronic lock, Ethan and Marcus breached the study.
Inside, an elderly man sat by a roaring fireplace, trembling as he looked up. Dr. Harrison Vance—the former chief forensic examiner who had signed Alexander’s death certificate ten years ago.
"Ethan...?" Dr. Vance gasped, his voice shaking. "They told me you were dead..."
"I'm alive, Doctor," Ethan said, stepping into the firelight, his dark combat suit wet with rain. "And so is Alexander Blackwood. But his lie ends tonight. You're coming with us to Chicago to tell the federal prosecutors the truth."
"I can't!" Dr. Vance wept, pulling a shaky hand through his thin hair. "If I talk, Alexander’s mercenaries will execute my family!"
Before Ethan could answer, the floor-to-ceiling glass windows shattered in a hail of gunfire!
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Heavy tactical rounds shredded the furniture. Alexander’s hit squad had laid a trap, waiting for Ethan to breach the house.
"Down!" Ethan shouted, tackling Dr. Vance behind a massive mahogany desk as plaster and wood rained over them.
Marcus returned fire with suppressed bursts, pinning the attackers near the broken window. Ethan pulled a flashbang from his tactical vest, pulled the pin, and hurled it into the corridor.
CRACK-BANG!

Blinding light and thunderous sound disoriented the mercenaries. Ethan moved like a storm, disarming the lead shooter and clearing an exit route through the side conservatory.
"We get to the chopper now!" Ethan barked, dragging Dr. Vance by his collar as they sprinted through the blinding rain toward their waiting stealth aircraft.
