Chapter 144 - The Shadow Operative

While Marcus and Dr. Moreau synchronized the intelligence files with the French Ministry of Justice, Sophie sat on a wooden ammunition crate in the corner of the bunker, carefully unzipping the belly of her plush white rabbit.

"Sophie, what are you doing?" Noah asked, kneeling beside his twin sister.

"Daddy put something inside Barnaby before he left this morning," Sophie whispered, her small fingers reaching into the synthetic stuffing.

She pulled out a tiny, thumb-sized black polymer device with a pulsing green LED light and a headphone jack.

A military-grade tactical transponder and localized audio receiver.

"Noah, look," Sophie whispered, handing him the device. "It’s linked to Daddy’s watch."

Noah plugged his iPad into the receiver, bypassing the bunker’s static filters.

Through the tablet’s high-fidelity speakers, the room was suddenly filled with the clear, crisp audio of Ethan’s voice, transmitting live from the Zurich penthouse:

"...I didn't come to Zurich to negotiate, Charles. I came to keep you in this room while my wife takes your empire..."

I rushed across the bunker floor, dropping to my knees beside my children, clutching Noah’s arm.

"Ethan..." I choked out, hearing his voice resonate through the cold concrete room.

"He's in Zurich, Mom," Noah said, analyzing the background audio telemetry on his screen. "I can hear the chime of the church bells from the Grossmünster cathedral. He’s on the top floor of the Baur au Lac hotel. He has Lord Sterling pinned with a thermal explosive bluff."

"A bluff?" I asked, my heart skipping a beat.

"Dad didn't have C-4 in his bag this morning," Noah smiled faintly, adjusting his glasses. "I helped him pack his briefcase. That detonator is connected to the emergency fire suppression system on the roof. He’s buying us time to drop the hammer on their banks."

I looked at my two extraordinary, fearless children.

They had not been broken by the violence of the world. They had absorbed their father’s courage, my tenacity, and the legacy of a mother who had fought to her last breath to give them a future.

I stood up, pulling my hair back into a tight tactical braid, turning to Captain Dupont and Marcus.

"Prep the French Gendarmerie tactical transport," I commanded, my voice carrying the unshakeable majesty of a queen leading her army into battle. "We're going to Zurich. And we're bringing my husband home."
