Chapter 119 - The Paper Trap

The red emergency lights above the driveway flashed in rhythm with the rain pouring down from the dark Chicago sky. Down at the perimeter gates, three heavy black SUVs idling with their engines roaring created an overwhelming sense of impending doom.
Inside our private security control room, the monitors displayed high-definition feeds of eight federal marshals in tactical gear stepping out of the vehicles, led by a stern-faced officer holding a red-sealed document.
"They brought an emergency temporary protection order signed by a federal judge in Washington D.C.," Marcus reported, his fingers dancing across his keyboard as he analyzed the digital warrant. "It grants immediate temporary custody of Noah and Sophie to Interpol representatives pending the DNA audit in Paris."
"They're using the legal system to pull my children out of my house," I said, my voice dangerously calm, though my heart was hammering against my ribs like a caged beast. "If Noah and Sophie step onto an diplomatic aircraft bound for France, Count Dominic will make them disappear before we even cross the Atlantic."
Ethan stood beside me, his tall frame looming over the control console like a dark shadow. His sharp blue eyes were cold as ice as he pulled a pair of encrypted satellite phones from the wall safe.
"They're not touching our kids, Victoria," Ethan said softly, his voice carrying an absolute, lethal certainty. "Marcus, trigger the biometric lockdown on the main gates to buy us five minutes. Activate the decoy transport protocol."
"Copy that," Marcus replied, hitting a red toggle switch.
Across the estate, heavy steel blast doors slid down over every window and entrance, sealing the mansion into an impenetrable vault. Down in the subterranean garage, two identical bulletproof black SUVs roared to life under remote automated guidance.
Ethan turned to me, wrapping his warm, strong hands around my face, forcing me to look directly into his deep blue eyes. "Listen to me, Victoria. You and I are going to take the kids out through the submerged boathouse tunnel on the high-speed launch. Marcus will guide the automated decoy vehicles through the front gates. The marshals will follow the decoys, giving us a clean exit onto Lake Michigan."
"Where are we taking Noah and Sophie?" I asked, leaning into his touch for a split second to gather my strength.
"To the Wisconsin safe house," Ethan promised, pressing a firm, passionate kiss against my forehead. "Veronica and Lily are already there with a full security team. Once the kids are secure, you and I fly straight to Paris to cut off the head of this snake."
Downstairs in the safe room, Noah held Sophie's hand tightly as we guided them toward the private dock beneath the boathouse. Sophie looked up at me, her eyes filled with tears, holding her plush bunny tightly against her chest.
"Mommy, is the bad man on TV going to take us?" she whimpered.
I knelt down on the damp wooden floor of the boathouse, looking my daughter straight in the eyes, placing my hand over her heart. "Nobody is taking you, Sophie. Your father and I built an empire to protect you, and no monster from the past will ever break this family. Do you trust me?"
Sophie nodded bravely, wiping her tears. "I trust you, Mommy."

The engine of our sleek, twin-turbocharged watercraft hummed to life in the dark tunnel. Outside the mansion, the heavy iron gates crashed open as the decoy vehicles tore into the night, drawing the federal marshals away in a storm of flashing lights and roaring sirens.
Ethan throttled the launch forward, cutting through the dark, choppy waves of Lake Michigan into the foggy night sky. The battle for our children had officially begun.
