Chapter 88 - The Ghost from LondonThe soft morning sun streamed through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of our Chicago residence, casting a warm golden glow across the polished oak floors. It was supposed to be a quiet Sunday. Noah was sitting on the rug constructing a complex Lego skyscraper, while Sophie sat curled up on the sofa hugging her favorite plush bunny, watching morning cartoons under a knitted blue blanket.

Ethan walked into the living room carrying two mugs of freshly brewed espresso, wearing a casual gray cashmere sweater and dark jeans. He set my mug on the glass coffee table and leaned down, pressing his lips against my temple with a warmth that grounded my entire world.

"You look peaceful," Ethan murmured, his thumb lightly caressing my shoulder.

"I am," I smiled, wrapping my fingers around the warm porcelain mug. "For the first time in ten years, Ethan... I don't feel like I'm waiting for the next bullet to fly."

Then, the living room television screen flickered violently.

The bright animated cartoon cut out mid-scene, replaced by static before plunging into a high-definition newsroom broadcast with a flashing crimson header: GLOBAL MARKET BREAKING NEWS.

"We interrupt regular programming for a developing story out of London," the news anchor reported, his tone tense and hurried. "A surprise legal filing in the High Court of Justice has plunged Sterling-Vance Enterprises into immediate corporate paralysis."

Ethan froze, his mug stopping halfway to his lips. "What is this?"

"According to newly unsealed documents from the Vance Family Trust," the anchor continued, "a surviving spouse from Ethan Vance's primary estate has come forward. Lady Charlotte Sterling-Vance, long presumed deceased following a maritime disaster in 2014, has officially presented verified biometric records and an active marriage license."

The screen cut to a live feed outside the Royal Courts of Justice in London.

Standing on the steps, surrounded by press cameras and high-profile security guards, was a woman dressed in a vintage ivory coat. She possessed striking emerald eyes, blonde hair pinned back flawlessly, and an expression of chilling, aristocratic arrogance.

Beside her stood Lord Julian Sterling—the long-lost elder cousin of Genevieve Sterling, whom we thought had relinquished all claims to the European banking syndicates.

"My husband, Ethan Vance, was coerced into a fraudulent second marriage with Victoria Vance while suffering from acute trauma ten years ago," Charlotte spoke into the cluster of microphones, her British accent refined and cold. "Under British common law and the Vance Trust Charter, any corporate transfers made during this period are legally void. Effective immediately, I am filing for full control of Sterling-Vance Enterprises... and emergency custody of my husband's biological heirs, Noah and Sophie."

"Mommy...?" Sophie’s small voice quavered as she looked up from the sofa, her wide hazel eyes darting between the woman on TV and me. "Is that lady talking about us?"

My heart hammered against my ribs like a battering ram. My breath caught in my throat as the world tilted on its axis.

I turned slowly to face Ethan.

His face had gone completely pale, his jaw set so hard the muscles jumped under his skin. The mug in his hand trembled violently before he set it down on the table with a sharp clatter.

"Ethan..." my voice was barely a whisper, laced with a terrifying mixture of dread and disbelief. "You told me Charlotte died in 2014. You told me you identified her ring after the boat explosion in Greece."

"She did die," Ethan said, his voice flat, hollow, and filled with a sudden, suffocating panic. "I buried the casket myself, Victoria. I swear to you on my life, I saw the dental records and the forensic report!"

Before I could speak, my phone on the table buzzed sharply.

It was a private, satellite-encrypted text message from an unknown number. I picked it up with shaking hands and read the words glowing on the screen:

“Thirty dollars bought him a decade in your bed, Chairwoman. But Charlotte holds the deed to his soul. You have twenty-four hours to step down from Sterling-Vance and hand over the children in London, or we release the original 2014 trust ledger that proves Ethan knew she was alive when he married you.”

I dropped the phone onto the rug. The silence in the room was deafening.

Down the hallway, the main security intercom chimed—a sharp, red flashing alert indicating that three armored vehicles had just pulled up outside our gated driveway.

The war wasn't over. It was just beginning.
