Chapter 135 - The Verdict of Geneva

Seventy-two hours after the battle on the tarmac of Cointrin Airport, the grand formal chamber of the Palais de Justice was filled with over three hundred journalists, international diplomats, and European legal scholars.

The proceedings were presided over by Chief Justice Marianne Keller of the Swiss Federal Supreme Court.

I sat at the center of the mahogany bar, wearing an elegant dark navy wool suit, my hair pinned back, my hands resting calmly over the leather-bound Normandy registry.

Beside me sat Noah and Sophie.

Noah wore his charcoal suit, his glasses clean, his posture erect and dignified. Sophie wore her favorite blue dress, her small hands resting neatly in her lap, her plush bunny sitting peacefully on the table beside her mother's papers.

On my left sat Ethan, wearing his formal military dress blues, his rows of combat decorations gleaming beneath the high chandeliers, his broad hand gently covering mine on the table.

Sitting fifty feet away in the prisoner’s dock, separated by four armed federal marshals, was Dominic Sterling.

He was stripped of his bespoke suits, wearing a generic gray prison jumpsuit, his jaw wired shut with surgical steel, his right arm bound in a heavy white cast. His eyes were hollow, sunken, staring blankly at the polished wood in front of him, the arrogance that had defined his life permanently extinguished.

Chief Justice Keller adjusted her reading glasses and brought her heavy wooden gavel down with three rhythmic, echoing cracks.

Crack. Crack. Crack.

"In the matter of the Estate of Arthur Vance, the guardianship of Noah Arthur de Saint-Germain and Sophie Hélène de Saint-Germain, and the criminal indictment of Dominic Sterling," Chief Justice Keller announced, her voice ringing with the unshakeable majesty of the law.

"This court finds that the parental and guardianship claims presented by Dominic Sterling were predicated upon forgery, subornation of perjury, and systematic criminal fraud."

She looked down from the high bench directly at my children.

Her stern, weathered face softened into an expression of profound, motherly warmth.

"The court formally recognizes the legal, binding, and irrevocable adoption granted by the French Republic in 2017. Noah and Sophie Vance are the lawful, sole children of Victoria Vance and Ethan Vance."

The entire courtroom erupted into a thunderous, collective breath of relief.

Chief Justice Keller raised her hand for order, turning her gaze onto the prisoner in the dock.

"Furthermore, pursuant to the mutual legal assistance treaties between Switzerland, France, and the United States, Dominic Sterling is hereby remanded to the custody of the International Criminal Court at The Hague without the possibility of bail, facing forty-two counts of crimes against humanity, corporate fraud, and trafficking."

BANG.

"Court is adjourned."

As the federal marshals pulled Dominic toward the subterranean holding cells, he turned his head slowly, catching sight of my family standing together at the mahogany table.

Noah and Sophie didn't flinch. They didn't look down in fear.

They looked directly into his defeated, broken eyes with the calm, eternal serenity of two children who knew they were loved beyond reason, protected by parents who had walked through hell to bring them into the light.

Dominic bowed his head, disappearing behind the heavy steel doors forever.
