Chapter 88 - The Citadel in the Storm

The North Sea was an abyss of black fury.

Thirty-foot waves crashed relentlessly against the colossal steel pilings of Citadel Alpha, sending explosions of white foam sixty feet into the air. The massive platform, an iron leviathan bristling with communications arrays and radar domes, groaned under the onslaught of the storm.

Our black combat zodiac boat, powered by twin muffled electric outboards, rode the crest of a massive swell, sliding into the shadow of the rig’s eastern maintenance shaft.

Alexander fired a pneumatic grapple upward. The titanium claw bit into the grating of the lower catwalk with a sharp *clack*.

"Line secure!" Alexander hissed through the tactical throat-mic. "Katherine, you and Liam stay behind me. Lucas, Leo, hold the rear guard with the reserve team."

"No," I replied, pulling my night-vision goggles down over my eyes. "Mia stays on the vessel with the extraction pilots under heavy guard. Liam and Lucas come with me. They are the only ones who can interface with Arthur’s terminal."

We scaled the wet nylon cable one by one, hauling ourselves up onto the slick iron catwalk sixty feet above the boiling sea. The cold was vicious, cutting through our insulated tactical suits like razor blades.

Above us, the heavy clanking of iron doors echoed over the howling wind. Arthur's mercenaries were patrolling the upper decks, their searchlights sweeping the violent waters, completely unaware that we had breached the underbelly of their fortress.

Liam slipped to the front, inserting Tristan’s silver cylinder into the maintenance console beside the hydraulic lift.

A tiny green LED pulsed. The magnetic lock clicked open with a muffled hiss.

We slipped inside the narrow, brightly lit service corridor. The air inside smelled of ozone, heavy diesel fuel, and salt.

"Thermal scan," I whispered to Leo.

Leo checked his handheld sensor. "Twelve hostiles on the level above us. But Mom... there’s an isolated heat signature thirty meters ahead, behind the reinforced glass observation cell."

We moved swiftly down the corridor, our boots making no sound on the perforated rubber flooring. Alexander took point, his suppressed carbine clearing every blind corner with surgical precision.

At the end of the hall, behind a thick wall of reinforced bulletproof glass, was Eleanor Vance.

She was no longer on the outside deck. Arthur had dragged her inside, locking her within a steel-and-glass isolation chamber like a laboratory specimen. She was huddled on the floor, shivering violently, wrapped in a coarse wool blanket. Her hair was completely silvered by stress, her face hollowed by hunger and terror.

When she heard our footsteps, she slowly raised her head.

The moment her bloodshot eyes locked onto me, and then onto Liam and Lucas standing beside me, she gasped, pressing her trembling, bruised hands against the glass.

"Katherine..." Eleanor’s voice came weakly through the intercom grill. "You... you came..."

"I didn't come for you, Eleanor," I said through the microphone, my voice devoid of mercy. "Where is Arthur?"

Eleanor began to weep, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. "He's in the Sovereign Vault... on the lowest deck beneath the sea line. He’s already initializing the transfer. Katherine, forgive me... please, for the love of God, forgive me for what I did to you and the children!"

I looked through the glass at the woman who had once stood at the pinnacle of high society, the woman who had treated me like garbage for seven years, sneering at my background, demanding that I surrender my children and vanish into obscurity.

"Forgiveness is earned, Eleanor," I said coldly. "What is Arthur’s override code?"

Eleanor pressed her forehead against the glass, sobbing hysterically. "He changed it... he changed it to the date of Geneva... 0-9-1-4... but there’s a trap, Katherine! The moment you enter the vault, the blast doors seal automatically from the outside! He never planned to leave this platform alive unless he had the children!"

Before she could finish, a piercing alarm shrieked throughout the corridors. Red emergency lights began flashing with blinding intensity.

The intercom speakers overhead crackled, and Arthur Vance’s aristocratic voice boomed through the metal fortress:

May you like

*"Intruder alert in Sector Four. Welcome, Katherine. I see you brought my legacy home."*
