Chapter 43 - Fractured Allegiances

The illusion of Eleanor Vance’s absolute control disintegrated into chaos. Lord Vane rose from his seat, accompanied by four other senior members of the Directorate. Their eyes, once lifeless and imperial, were now dilated with fury and self-preservation.
"You brought a viper to our sanctuary, Eleanor!" Vane shouted, pointing a trembling, ringed finger at Christian. "You swore this boy would secure the Western ports and stabilize our banking conduits! Instead, you have used Directorate capital to fund a rogue syndicate!"
"It was an investment!" Eleanor shrieked, losing her aristocratic grace for the first time in her life. "Every dollar was utilized to build an army capable of crushing Katherine’s corporate empire! Once we possessed her holdings, your capital would have yielded tenfold!"
"With what collateral?" I demanded, my voice cutting through her desperate defense like cold steel. "Her empire was already bleeding before she arrived. Julian's public trial destroyed the family’s international standing. You have no collateral, Eleanor. You have nothing but debt, forged promises, and a private army you can no longer afford to pay."
As if on cue, the snipers in the gallery began looking at one another. Mercenaries fight for glory only when victory is assured; they fight for money always. The realization that their payroll was tied to a frozen ledger instantly altered the air in the chamber.
Lucas, only seven years old, looked up toward the shadows of the catwalks and spoke with chilling clarity: "The transaction server at Banque Privée just rejected batch code 409. Your contract ends at midnight, gentlemen. In twelve minutes, you are working for a bankrupt ghost."
Christian’s eyes snapped toward Lucas. The boy didn't blink. He had watched me dismantle corporate boards; he knew the power of the clock.
"Shut that child up!" Christian roared, abandoning all pretense of aristocratic calm. He drew a custom-machined tactical pistol from beneath his coat and leveled it directly at Lucas’s forehead.

Before he could pull the trigger, Maya, clinging to Liam’s sleeve, let out a piercing scream that echoed off the high vaulted ceiling.
Alexander didn't wait. Moving with explosive speed born of years of covert operations, he closed the distance between himself and Christian in the span of a heartbeat. His left hand locked around Christian’s wrist, forcing the barrel of the weapon upward just as a deafening gunshot cracked against the granite walls. The bullet ricocheted harmlessly off the vaulted ceiling, sending a shower of stone dust raining over the twelve Patriarchs.
