Chapter 10 - The Final Threshold

The silence in the grand foyer was so absolute you could hear the grandfather clock ticking its slow, heavy rhythm against the wall.

I looked at the woman who had orchestrated my humiliation, who had watched without a shred of remorse as her son traded our marriage away for a fabricated bloodline. For two years, I had replayed that exact boardroom scene in my head, imagining every possible way I could make her beg.

Now, standing before me, she was entirely broken.

“No, Eleanor,” I said softly, the words carrying an absolute, unyielding finality.

Her head snapped up, her eyes wide with frantic disbelief. “Evelyn—!”

“You traded family for a dynasty built on lies,” I continued, stepping closer so she could see the absolute absence of mercy in my gaze. “You believed that blood and money were the only currency that mattered. Well, you got your wish. You have your blood, and you have your ruin. But you will never, under any circumstances, have a place in my children's lives.”

Eleanor staggered backward, hitting the wall behind her as if she had been physically struck. She opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out—only a ragged, suffocating gasp.

Without another word, I turned away, leaving her standing alone in the grand, echoing foyer of the empire she had lost.

I walked back out through the heavy oak doors, stepping into the cool, clean autumn night air. The rain had finally stopped, and through a break in the dark clouds, a brilliant cluster of stars shone brightly over the Chicago skyline.

I took a deep breath, filled my lungs with the crisp evening breeze, and walked back toward the guest cottage where my four children were sleeping safely in the light of a brand-new dawn.
