Chapter 63 - The Living Weapon

Tristan turned on his heel without waiting for an answer, gesturing for us to follow. A double perimeter of private contractors fell in behind us, their heavy boots thudding against the wet concrete in rhythmic precision.
We were led through a pneumatic blast door into the subterranean belly of the facility. Inside, the compound hummed with industrial power generators. Banks of high-frequency trading terminals, military satellite uplink stations, and encrypted tactical command monitors lit up the vast, cavernous bunker. Dozens of technicians in unmarked uniforms worked in dead silence.
"You brought us here under threat of death," I said, keeping my children tight behind me as we entered a vast central observation deck overlooking the communication floor. "If you intended to kill us, you would have dropped the jet over the sea. State your terms, Tristan."
Tristan walked behind an expansive obsidian desk set in the center of the platform. He pressed a palm to a biometric scanner, illuminating a massive panoramic hologram displaying the global corporate network of Vance Holdings—now rebranded under my sovereign control—alongside a web of clandestine offshore black-budget accounts.
"Julian was a soft, degenerate fool," Tristan began, his tone analytical, devoid of brotherly connection or familial grief. "Mother Eleanor bought his silence with society parties and cocaine. Father Arthur humored her delusions because he needed Julian as a public distraction—a lightning rod for corporate media while our real capital was channeled into private naval bases, sovereign surveillance grids, and autonomous defense contracts."
Tristan leaned forward, resting his palms on the obsidian surface. "When you dismantled Julian in the ballroom, I watched the live feed from this room. When you bankrupted Eleanor and forced Arthur into a fatal stroke in the Zurich vault, I did not intervene. In fact, you did me an immense service. You excised the rotting, useless limbs of this dynasty."
"Then why intercept us?" Maya challenged, stepping out from behind me, clutching her secure tablet to her chest. "Arthur’s dead. Eleanor is facing thirty years in a federal penitentiary. The legal title to Vance Holdings belongs entirely to my mother and the four of us."
Tristan looked at Maya, a faint, condescending smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "Title? You speak of legal title in a world governed by force, little sister. You hold corporate shares registered in London, New York, and Geneva. But this base, the three offshore strike carriers, and forty billion dollars of subterranean sovereign assets were locked behind a dual-key protocol."
Tristan tapped his chest. "Key One is my biometric gene-signature. Key Two was supposed to be Arthur’s." He pointed a single, long finger directly at Leo, then Liam. "When Arthur died, the protocol defaulted to the youngest male of the pure Vance bloodline. That means your little boy Leo—or your son Liam—holds the secondary biological clearance."
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, but I kept my posture rigid as iron. "They are children. They will never give you clearance to your father’s war machine."
May you like
"They don't have to give it willingly, Katherine," Tristan replied softly. "They only have to bleed on the scanner."
