Chapter 42 - The Directorate's Ledger

A deafening silence fell over the chamber. The Patriarch sitting at the center of the crescent table—an ancient man named Lord Vane whose family had funded European railway empires two centuries prior—leaned forward, his skeletal hands gripping the carved oak armrests.

"What did she say?" Vane’s gravelly voice cracked through the silence. "Eleanor. What is that key in her hand?"

Eleanor’s composure fractured for a fraction of a second, her lips thinning into a pale line. "She is bluffing, my Lord! Katherine is an outsider—a woman who clawed her way up from nothing. She cannot possess the Founder’s Key! Julian never had access to it, and neither could she!"

"Julian didn't have it," I said, stepping deliberately forward until the crimson laser dots rested squarely on the lapels of my coat. "Because Julian was never the blood of the Founder. You stole him from an impoverished branch of the family after your true infant died in Vienna forty years ago. But my children? Their lineage doesn't trace through Julian’s fraudulent paperwork. It traces through the matriarchal line of the original sovereign founders—a bloodline you tried to purge thirty years ago."

The twelve Patriarchs exchanged panicked glances. Murmurs broke out across the dais, shattering the cold ritual of the Conclave.

Christian’s mocking smile began to waver, though he forced his chin high. "Lies! Fabrications concocted to buy time! Men, neutralize the bodyguards and take the children!"

"Stand down!" Lord Vane commanded, slamming his fist onto the blackened oak. His voice lacked youth, but it carried the weight of hundreds of billions in capital. "Hold your fire!"

The snipers in the gallery hesitated, their fingers resting taut on the triggers.

Alexander stepped forward beside me, drawing a sleek digital reader from inside his coat and docking the platinum card into its slot. A holographic projection sprang to life between us and the crescent table, displaying the ledger of the Directorate. Millions of financial transactions flickered in brilliant blue light, tracing directly from the Swiss vaults to shell entities managed exclusively by Christian Vance.

"Take a closer look, gentlemen," Alexander stated, his tone merciless. "While Eleanor told you that Christian was being groomed as your protector, he has spent the last four years siphoning sixty-two percent of your private liquidity into unregulated crypto-derivatives and private military contracts. If you eliminate Katherine tonight, those funds vanish forever. Christian didn't come here to save the Directorate. He came to liquidate you."

Eleanor’s face drained of color as she stared at the glowing figures hovering in the air. "Christian... what is this?"

Christian didn't answer his mother. His gaze was fixed on the screen, his jaw grinding until the muscle twitched visibly beneath his pale skin. "You should have stayed in New York, Katherine."
