Chapter 71 - The Siege of Vanguard Tower

The concussive shockwave of the rooftop breach tore through the reinforced acoustic tiles above, showering the marble entryway in pulverized plaster and twisted steel. Smoke, acrid with the stink of C-4 and scorched wiring, curled down the helical staircase leading to the private helipad.

"Liam, stay behind the ballistic partition!" I commanded, my voice cutting through the rising shrill of the tower's automated Klaxon. "Alexander, seal the tertiary elevator shafts! Do not let them funnel us into the center corridor!"

Alexander moved with the cold, lethal economy of a man who had survived a dozen shadow wars. His hands danced across the master security panel, slamming down hydraulic bulkheads on floors seventy-nine and eighty. "The breach came from three tactical ropes off the lead transport," he barked, racking an assault rifle and tossing a spare tactical sidearm directly into my hands. "Six operators on the roof. Another twelve coming up the service core. Tristan threw his primary strike force at our throat."

Beside me, Liam didn't flinch. At fourteen years old, he had the calculated calm of an apex predator. He braced the stock of the tactical shotgun against his shoulder, his eyes locked onto the smoke-choked staircase. "They aren't using non-lethal suppression, Mom," he noted chillingly, nodding toward the shattered glass railing where high-velocity armor-piercing rounds were already gouging lines into the Brazilian walnut paneling. "They’re shooting to kill everyone who isn’t Leo or me."

Across the command suite, Leo’s fingers were flying across three separate terminals. The screens flickered violently as Apex Syndicate malware battered our external firewalls. "I’ve locked down the building’s atmospheric controls," Leo said, his voice taut but steady. "I can vent halon gas into stairwells B and C. That will choke out the ground assault team climbing from floor seventy-five. But the roof team is wearing closed-circuit rebreathers."

"Then we take the roof team ourselves," I said, cold fury replacing any lingering shred of fear.

Eleanor Vance had underestimated me five years ago when she threw twelve million dollars at my feet, believing a pregnant, discarded woman would crawl away and die in obscurity. She had underestimated me in the Geneva boardrooms when I tore the Vance family legacy from her grasping fingers. And now, she and Tristan thought they could drop from the sky and steal my children like cattle.

The first black-clad contractor rounded the stairwell landing, his suppressed submachine gun leveled straight at the command desk.

Before the barrel could settle on Leo, Alexander fired two precise bursts. The contractor collapsed backward, his body tumbling down the flight of stairs into the secondary breach team.

"Suppressing fire!" Alexander shouted, moving toward the flanking archway. "Katherine, cover the private lift! They have a master override card!"

The private lift chimed—a cheerful, obscene sound amidst the thunder of automatic gunfire. The steel doors slid open. Two Apex commandos stepped forward, flashbangs gripped in their tactical vests.

I didn't hesitate. I raised the sidearm Alexander had given me, aligned the sights through the haze of smoke, and fired three continuous shots into the center mass of the point man. The heavy ceramic plating absorbed the initial impact, but the kinetic force knocked him off balance into his partner. Liam seized the opening, stepping into the hallway and discharging the shotgun. The blast shredded the lift’s interior controls, severing the hydraulic cables and sending the car plummeting down the shaft in an ear-splitting screech of grinding emergency brakes.

"Lift shaft neutralized!" Liam reported, racking another shell without a tremor in his hands.

"Mom!" Leo suddenly shouted from the terminal, his face drained of color under the crimson emergency lamps. "Look at the telemetry! The roof team isn't trying to breach the penthouse salon anymore!"

I sprinted to the glass desk, peering over his shoulder. The thermal imaging of the penthouse showed four heat signatures moving rapidly across the exterior perimeter of the roof, planting magnetic charges directly above the structural support beams of the master bedroom suite—where Chloe and Maya were secured inside the panic vault.

"They aren't trying to capture us," I whispered, the realization hitting me like ice water. "Tristan wants to drop the roof on my daughters to force our surrender."
