Chapter 34 - The Breath of Ruin

A deafening siren shrieked through the ground-floor ducts above. Within a fraction of a second, high-pressure nozzles hidden along the library ceiling erupted with a roar like a jet engine, pumping dense, oxygen-displacing halon gas into the entire first level.
On the screen, chaos exploded.
Henrik's pristine composure shattered as the room's air evaporated. He gasped, dropping the pearl-handled gun, clawing frantically at his throat as his lungs were starved of oxygen. His remaining two contractors threw off their heavy helmets, retching and staggering blindly toward the shattered terrace to find clean air.
Julian Vance shrieked—a pitiful, choked squeal—and collapsed onto his knees, dropping the briefcase and clawing at the marble tiles.
Alexander, who had anticipated the protocol the moment the siren's tone dropped half an octave, had already clamped a localized emergency rebreather over his mouth and nose—pulled from the hidden compartment under the library hearth.
Moving like an apparition through the milky fog of halon, Alexander didn't shoot Henrik. He grabbed Julian by the collar, dragging him like a sack of trash toward the library windows, before stepping over Henrik's writhing body. With brutal precision, Alexander slammed the heel of his tactical boot into Henrik's kneecap, shattering the joint with an audible crunch that registered even on the console's muffled audio.
"That," Alexander's voice filtered through the rebreather's speaker, "is for daring to breathe the same air as my sons."
He reached down, picked up Henrik’s fallen pearl-handled weapon, and turned toward the hidden panel of the vault elevator shaft behind the library bookshelves.
Five minutes later, the hydraulic hiss of the vault door announced his arrival.
The heavy steel swung open. Alexander stood in the doorway, bleeding from his brow, his knuckles torn, his suit ruined, but his eyes blazing with an unholy triumph. In his right hand, he held Julian Vance by the scruff of his neck, completely broken and wheezing from lack of air. Under his left arm, he carried Henrik’s encrypted briefcase.
"Papa!" Lucas and Chloe surged forward, wrapping their small arms around his legs.
Alexander instantly melted. The lethal warlord vanished, replaced by a father who dropped to one knee, wrapping his powerful arms around our four children, burying his face in their hair as his shoulders shook with raw relief.

"You are safe," he whispered against Chloe’s neck. "The fortress held."
Then he looked up at me. His gaze was burning with an intensity that took my breath away. "Your mother," he said to the children without breaking eye contact with me, "is the deadliest queen this world has ever seen."
