Chapter 44 - Bloodline of the Sovereign

The chamber exploded into violence.
With a sickening crunch, Alexander snapped Christian’s wrist, forcing the firearm from his grasp. Christian screamed in agony, stumbling backward across the marble floor, his silver ledger clattering across the stones.
"Guards, kill them!" Eleanor shrieked, clawing at her emerald necklace as if suffocating. "Kill them all!"
From the high gallery, two snipers loyal to Christian opened fire, spraying automatic rounds down toward the crescent table. The Directorate members dove beneath their massive oak dais, screaming in terror as centuries of dignity dissolved into survival instincts. Stone splinters erupted where the heavy rounds tore into the pillars.
"Get behind the altar!" Alexander bellowed, drawing his own weapon and firing two precise shots upward into the gallery, dropping one of the snipers instantly from the catwalk.
I grabbed Maya and Liam, pulling them beneath the heavy lip of a granite pedestal that supported an ancient bronze bust of the Founder. Leo stood protectively in front of his siblings, while Lucas swiftly gathered the dropped digital ledger from the floor, his small fingers flying across the keypad.
"Mom," Lucas shouted over the thunderous roar of gunfire, "the Conclave mainframe is tied to the central fire suppression and lock-down protocols! The biometric terminal is built into the Founder's pedestal!"
"Do it, Leo!" I commanded.
Leo understood without hesitation. He slammed his right palm against the brass plate beneath the bust. For a second, nothing happened. Then, a low hum vibrated through the stones beneath our feet. An automated voice, synthesized and ancient, echoed through hidden speakers behind the tapestries:
*Direct bloodline confirmed. Matriarchal sequence recognized. Sovereign override engaged.*
Instantly, thick slabs of ballistic glass descended from the ceiling, sealing off the high gallery and enclosing the snipers behind impenetrable walls. At the same time, high-pressure halogen floodlights snapped on throughout the cavernous room, blinding anyone whose eyes were adjusted to the torchlight.
Christian, clutching his broken wrist on the marble floor, squinted through the blinding white glare, his face contorted in disbelief and rage.

"How?" he choked out, blood dripping from his shattered wrist. "How could a child have access to the deep security vault?"
"Because," I said, stepping out from behind the pillar, my head held high as Alexander took his place at my side, "you spent your entire life believing power is inherited through men who conquer. You forgot that this empire was funded, built, and chartered by women who survived."
