Chapter 6 - The Morning After the Crown

The autumn rain lashed against the arched leaded-glass windows of the master parlor, washing the gray Chicago dawn in streaks of silver water.

I stood by the window, wrapped in a cashmere cardigan, holding a cup of black coffee as I looked down at the sprawling gravel driveway below. A single black town car idled by the grand stone steps, its engine rumbling softly through the damp morning air.

The heavy mahogany door clicked open behind me.

Julian stepped into the room. He wore a rumpled charcoal suit without a tie, his dark hair disheveled, carrying a small leather overnight bag in his left hand. The arrogant, untouchable heir of Whitmore Holdings was entirely gone, replaced by a man who looked as though he had aged ten years in a single night.

“The federal marshals are downstairs to escort me off the property,” Julian said, his voice flat, drained of any lingering defiance. “The temporary injunction on my personal accounts leaves me with just enough liquidity to cover a week at a downtown extended-stay hotel.”

I didn't turn around immediately. I took a slow sip of coffee, feeling the heat anchor me to the floorboards.

“You’re lucky you’re walking out the front door under your own power, Julian,” I said quietly, finally turning to face him. “Given the scale of the financial fraud your father orchestrated, you could easily be joining Vanessa in Cook County jail today.”

Julian winced, the sting of her name hitting him like a physical blow. He walked slowly across the Persian rug, stopping ten feet away from me, his eyes darting toward the doorway that led out toward the private guest cottage where my children were still fast asleep.

“Are... are I allowed to see them?” he asked, his voice cracking with unexpected vulnerability. “Noah, Ethan, Grace, Lily... my children?”

“Not today,” I replied instantly, my tone unyielding. “You spent two years ignoring their existence while you paraded around with a fraudster’s children. They don't know who you are, Julian, and right now, my priority is keeping their world safe, stable, and completely insulated from the wreckage you created.”

Julian bowed his head, a heavy, ragged sigh escaping his lips. He didn't argue. He knew he had forfeited any right to demand anything from me.

“I hope you realize what you’ve inherited, Evelyn,” he murmured, lifting his bag slightly. “My father built this empire on bodies, bribes, and bad blood. It’s a poisoned crown.”

“Then it’s a good thing,” I said, meeting his hollow gaze without flinching, “that I’ve never been afraid of a little poison.”
