Chapter 64 - A Mother’s Fire

Before Tristan’s words had fully dissolved into the cold air of the command bunker, Alexander’s hand dropped toward his sidearm.
In an instant, four contractors raised their assault rifles, the red laser sights painting crimson dots across Alexander’s chest and forehead.
"Stand down, Alexander," I commanded, my voice ringing clear and steady across the bunker floor. I did not flinch. I did not step back. I took two deliberate strides forward until the edge of the obsidian desk pressed against my ribs, placing myself directly between Tristan’s predatory gaze and my sons.
"You think you’re Arthur’s masterpiece," I said, locking my eyes onto Tristan’s pale gaze. "Arthur was a coward who hid behind shell companies, lawyers, and locked doors. He spent twenty-two years hiding you in a concrete bunker in the Scottish mist because he was terrified of what would happen if the world saw his madness. You aren't his sovereign heir, Tristan. You are his caged dog."
Tristan’s pale eyes narrowed, a razor-thin flash of genuine fury rippling across his otherwise porcelain facade. "I hold an army at my back, Katherine. You hold nothing but four terrified children."
"These children survived Eleanor’s assassins, Arthur’s poisoned pens, and the entire legal machinery of Geneva," Liam suddenly spoke up, stepping forward until he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with me. His young voice did not waiver. "We watched our mother take Arthur’s twelve-million-dollar buyout and build a fortress out of it. You’re just another bully sitting behind a desk."
Tristan stared at Liam, surprised by the boy's defiance.
In that split second of diversion, Maya made her move.
Her fingers slid down the edge of her tablet, pressing a covert sequence into the side bezel. The device didn't ping an external satellite; it engaged a local zero-day exploit extracted directly from Arthur’s personal Zurich ledger—a master override designed by Arthur himself in case his clandestine base ever mutinied against him.
A shrill, deafening diagnostic alarm suddenly tore through the bunker.
The massive holographic display above Tristan’s desk flickered violently, cycling from sovereign blue to blood red.
*CRITICAL BIOMETRIC OVERRIDE DETECTED,* the automated base synthesizer droned across the loudspeakers. *ALL SECURE VAULT DOORS ENGAGING FULL LOCKDOWN.*
Tristan spun around toward his primary console. "What did you do?!" he shouted, his mask of icy detachment shattering.
"Arthur didn't trust you, Tristan," Maya said calmly, stepping back beside Alexander. "In his Zurich files, there wasn't just a birth certificate. There was a kill-switch protocol. Arthur built this entire base on a dead-man's loop tied directly to the twelve-million-dollar sovereign buyout trust he gave my mother six years ago."

I turned to Tristan, my lips curving into a deadly, unforgiving smile. "You invited the architect of Arthur’s ruin into your home, Tristan. Did you really think I came empty-handed?"
