Chapter 78 - The Ghost of Arthur Vance

Julian remained on his knees, weeping like a broken child, the blood from the shattered glass on the floor soaking into the knees of his thousand-dollar trousers.
"They... they left me to die," he choked out, looking up at me with eyes completely devoid of pride. "Everything I did... I did it for the family. For her."
"You did it out of weakness, Julian," I said, kneeling down so that my eyes were level with his. "You let them turn you into a weapon against your own children. Liam, Leo, Maya, Chloe... they carry your blood, yet you let Tristan bring armed mercenaries to execute them in their own home."
"I didn't know!" Julian sobbed, clutching his head. "I swear to God, Katherine, I didn't know Tristan was going to kill them! He told me it was just an extraction! He told me we were reuniting the family!"
"It doesn't matter what you knew," Alexander said from the door, his eyes checking his tactical watch. "Tristan’s jet has just begun its descent into Zurich-Kloten. We have thirty-five minutes before they reach the central clearing house."
Julian grabbed the hem of my coat, his hands trembling violently. "Katherine... please. They'll kill me. If I don't sign, Tristan will kill me. If I do sign, the police will lock me away for life. Help me. For the sake of the children... help me!"
"You don't deserve my help, Julian," I said, pulling my coat from his grasp. "But I will give you a choice. You can sit here, wait for Tristan to drag you to Zurich like a dog, and spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security prison. Or... you can give me the master key."
"What master key?" Julian stammered, confused. "The biometric key is tied to my DNA! It only works if I am physically at the terminal!"
"Arthur Vance didn't trust you, Julian," Maya’s voice chimed in through our secure comms. "Mother, I just finished decrypting the hidden partitions inside Arthur’s private will—the one Eleanor thought she destroyed in Geneva."
Maya's voice filled the room, cold and triumphant:
"Arthur knew Julian was weak. He knew Eleanor was treacherous. Before he died, Arthur embedded a ghost protocol inside the Zurich Sovereign Vault. It’s an automated dead-man's fail-safe called *The Sovereign Lineage*. Julian’s signature alone cannot move the four billion."
Julian stared at the ceiling speaker in shock. "What are you talking about?! I'm his only son!"
"You were his biological son, Julian," I said, the truth finally falling into place like the final lock on an ancient gate. "But Arthur wasn't interested in biology. He was interested in survival. He knew the Vance dynasty would destroy itself from greed. The dead-man's protocol requires Julian’s biometric key... *jointly paired* with the verified DNA of Arthur Vance’s direct grandchildren."
"Liam and Leo," Alexander breathed, a hard smile touching his lips.
"The children," Julian whispered, the realization striking him like a physical blow. "Arthur locked the treasury to Katherine’s children all along..."
"Tristan doesn't know," Maya continued. "Tristan thinks he only needs Julian. When Tristan forces Julian onto that terminal in Zurich, the system won't transfer the funds to Singapore. It will trigger a total lockdown—unless the sovereign heirs input their remote blood code."
I stood up, towering over Julian.
"You're going to Zurich, Julian," I commanded. "You're going to meet Tristan at that bank with your head held high. You're going to act like the obedient little puppet they think you are. You will place your hand on that scanner."
May you like
"And then?" Julian asked, terrified.
"And then," I smiled, a smile carved from five years of endurance, survival, and sovereign fury, "my children and I will take the entire four-billion-dollar empire, and leave Tristan and Eleanor with nothing but the handcuffs they prepared for you."
