Chapter 70 - The Midnight Ultimatum

The war room fell into absolute, suffocating silence.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the clock on the Houses of Parliament chimed midnight, the deep, hollow tolls reverberating across the rain-swept river Thames.

"Mom," Chloe said quietly, pulling on my sleeve. "Is Grandmother coming for us?"

I knelt down, wrapping my arms tightly around Chloe and Leo, resting my forehead against Chloe’s curls. "No, sweetheart. Grandmother and Tristan are running out of shadows to hide in. I promise you, I will never let them set foot in this house."

Suddenly, the war room’s lights flickered.

A low, deep electrical hum resonated through the concrete foundation of the Vanguard Tower. Across the entire eighty-story skyscraper, the humming grew louder, a violent surge of power coursing through the internal circuitry.

"Alexander, check the grid!" Marcus shouted, reaching for the wall intercom.

"The building's main power has just been severed," Alexander reported, drawing his weapon as the overhead chandeliers snapped off completely, plunging the penthouse into absolute darkness.

Instantly, the emergency red auxiliary lights hummed to life, bathing the vast room in an ominous crimson glow.

On the main central monitor wall—which should have been offline with the rest of the electrical grid—the panoramic screens suddenly flickered to life.

A live video feed activated.

Sitting in a lavish, wood-paneled room surrounded by floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and armed private security, was Eleanor Vance. She was dressed in an immaculate emerald silk blouse, her hair perfectly coiffed, looking as regal and cold as she had on the day she threw the twelve-million-dollar buyout at my feet.

Beside her, standing with his hands folded behind his back, was Tristan Vance.

"Good evening, Katherine," Eleanor said, her voice smooth, dripping with aristocratic venom through the penthouse speakers. "Did you truly think you could strip me of my family name, humiliate my son Julian in front of high society, and steal Arthur’s legacy without facing the full wrath of the Vance bloodline?"

"Eleanor," I said, stepping forward until I stood directly beneath the crimson glare of the monitors. "You're a fugitive from justice. Every police agency in the Western hemisphere is hunting you."

"The police belong to nation-states, Katherine. The Apex Syndicate answers to no one," Eleanor replied, a cruel, mocking smile curling her lips. "You took our twelve million dollars and thought you were a queen. But you forgot one simple truth: you were never one of us. You were a vessel brought in to bear children for a sovereign name."

Tristan stepped into the center of the camera frame, his pale blue eyes staring directly through the lens at me.

"Look out your penthouse window, Katherine," Tristan said.

I rushed to the floor-to-ceiling glass wall.

Down below, surrounding the entire perimeter of Vanguard Tower, dozens of unmarked black SUVs and tactical transport vans had completely sealed off the street. Heavily armed contractors in matte-black body armor were pouring out, establishing a military perimeter around the ground floor lobby.

Simultaneously, above our heads, the thunderous roar of twin helicopter rotors shook the structural glass of the roof.

Tristan’s voice echoed throughout the room, cold and absolute:

*"You have sixty seconds to send Liam and Leo to the roof, Katherine. Yield the boys to the bloodline, or my men will breach the tower floor by floor, execute every soul inside, and burn your precious twelve-million-dollar empire to the ground."*

Beside me, Liam reached down and picked up a tactical shotgun from Alexander’s weapons locker, racking the slide with a clean, lethal click.

"Mom," Liam said, his young face bathed in red emergency light, looking up at me with eyes that knew no fear. "What's the order?"

Outside, the first heavy explosive breach detonated against the penthouse roof door.
