Chapter 74 - The Fall of Floor Eighty

Before I could squeeze the trigger, a deep, mechanical groan reverberated beneath our boots.

"Katherine, look out!" Alexander roared, lunging forward and tackling me sideways across the wet deck.

A shoulder-fired rocket slammed directly into the penthouse's communications dome thirty yards behind us. The concussive blast blew the maintenance catwalk apart, sending shrapnel whistling through the air. Tristan, using the smoke and debris as cover, scrambled on his hands and knees toward the helicopter. His surviving mercenary grabbed his collar, hauling him roughly into the cabin.

"Pull up! Pull up now!" Eleanor’s panicked voice echoed over the turbine scream.

The helicopter’s pilot overrode the jammed flight controls by manually cutting the digital autopilot, pulling maximum collective. The heavy aircraft tilted dangerously to the side, its rotor tips missing the perimeter rail by inches before it surged upward into the driving storm clouds, vanishing into the Manhattan night sky.

"They're running," Liam said, running over to help Alexander and me to our feet. His face was streaked with soot, but his eyes were sharp, scanning the skies.

"They didn't come alone," Alexander warned, pointing down through the blown-out skylight of the penthouse.

Below us, floor eighty was being swarmed. The secondary assault force—the ground team that had bypassed the lower barricades through the freight elevators—had successfully breached the main executive floor. Gunfire echoed from the private gallery below.

"Leo! Maya! Report!" I shouted into my comms, running back toward the interior stairwell.

"Mother, they’re in the central hallway!" Maya answered, her voice tight but remarkably controlled. "They’re using heavy breaching rams on the vault’s outer blast door! We have five minutes before the secondary hydraulics fail!"

"We don't need five minutes," I replied. "Alexander, activate the Sub-Basement Protocol."

Alexander froze for half a second, his eyes meeting mine. "The Sub-Basement Protocol vents the entire executive floor's sprinkler system with high-pressure nitrogen. It’s an irreversible total shutdown of Vanguard Tower's primary servers."

"Do it," I ordered without hesitation. "Bricks and servers can be rebuilt. My daughters cannot."

Alexander pulled a heavy crimson keycard from his tactical harness and swiped it through the exterior terminal beside the roof bulkhead. "Nitrogen purge initiated. T-minus sixty seconds."

We rushed down the spiral staircase, bypassing the burning upper salon. We entered the vault corridor from the rear maintenance tunnel, flanking the six Apex mercenaries who were setting shape charges on the vault door.

They never heard us coming over the roar of the alarms.

Alexander fired three rapid bursts from his recovered sidearm, neutralizing two men instantly. Liam provided lethal flanking fire, his shotgun clearing the narrow corridor with brutal efficiency. I advanced behind them, putting two rounds into the third operator as he tried to raise his weapon.

The remaining three contractors, realizing they were caught in an enclosed kill-zone between an armed strike team and an impenetrable vault, threw down their weapons and raised their hands against the steel walls.

"On your knees! Face the floor!" Alexander roared, kicking their rifles down the corridor.

The heavy steel vault door hissed, the hydraulic pressure releasing as Maya disengaged the inner locks. The massive door swung open. Maya stepped out first, holding an emergency flare, with ten-year-old Chloe right behind her, clutching a secure hard drive against her chest.

"Mom!" Chloe cried, throwing her arms around my waist.

I dropped to my knees, wrapping my arms tightly around both of my daughters, burying my face in Chloe’s hair. The smell of smoke and rain was suffocating, but they were breathing. They were whole.

"I've got you," I whispered, my voice trembling for the first time all night. "I've got you both. It's over."

"It's not over, Mother," Maya said quietly, looking down the corridor where Leo was running toward us from the command suite, carrying a ruggedized military laptop.

"She’s right," Leo said breathlessly, holding up the screen. "Look at what Tristan’s helicopter left behind on our local relay."

On the glowing screen was a global financial transfer document, bearing the private digital seal of Arthur Vance's secret offshore estate.

"Tristan wasn't just trying to kidnap us," Leo said grimly. "The assault on Vanguard Tower was a diversion. While we were fighting on the roof, the Apex Syndicate initiated the liquidation of every Vance asset held in Zurich, London, and Tokyo. They’re stealing four billion dollars from the legacy trust—and moving it into a private black account registered in Julian Vance's name."
