Chapter 24 - A Mother's Defiance

A cold, bitter laugh escaped my throat. I stood taller, letting the sheer absurdity and audacity of his words fuel my resolve.

"A useful queen?" I walked around the massive desk until I was standing barely three feet from him, looking down into those terrifyingly familiar grey eyes. "Listen to me very carefully, Alexander Vance. I didn't rip Julian’s empire from his hands to hand it over to another arrogant Vance man with a god complex. I bled for five years in this family. I endured Eleanor’s insults, Julian’s infidelities, and the suffocating terror of raising four infants while their father brought mistresses into our guest house."

I tapped my chest with a manicured finger, hard. "I built this fortress. I secured the twelve million, then I turned it into hundreds of millions. I command the board. The quadruplets call me Mama. They do not know your name. They do not know Geneva. And if you think a piece of parchment written by a dead old man in Switzerland gives you the right to walk into my life and dictate terms, you are vastly more foolish than Julian ever was."

The operative, Henri, shifted his weight behind me, but Alexander raised a single finger, stopping him instantly.

Alexander didn't flinch. Instead, he slowly stood up, closing the height advantage I had tried to maintain. He towered over me, his broad shoulders blocking out the city lights behind him, the faint scent of sandalwood, crisp mountain air, and expensive tobacco rolling off him.

"You speak of Julian as if he and I share anything other than a surname stolen by fraud," Alexander whispered, his voice dangerously close. "Julian was a coward who hid behind his mother’s skirts and a trust fund he didn't earn. Do not mistake a lion for a jackal, Evelyn."

He reached into his breast pocket. Marcus flinched, but Alexander merely withdrew a slender, gold-plated flash drive and placed it on the desk between us.

"In that drive," Alexander said, "are the frozen asset orders for every European account Julian attempted to hide before his arrest. It also contains the unredacted offshore bank logs linking Eleanor Vance to the hitman she hired two weeks ago to tamper with your car brakes outside the children’s private academy."

The air left my lungs in an agonizing rush. *The near-accident on Lake Shore Drive.* The police had ruled it a brake-line failure caused by road salt and manufacturing wear.

"Eleanor is in a federal holding facility," Marcus interjected, his voice tight. "She has no access to communications!"

"A woman with thirty million dollars hidden in Liechtenstein always has access," Alexander countered without looking at Marcus. "I had the hitman intercepted in Montreal four days ago. He is currently at the bottom of the Saint Lawrence River. And Eleanor’s offshore funds have been absorbed into my primary holding account."

Alexander took a half-step closer, his eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that made the room feel unbearably small.

"You are a magnificent mother, Evelyn. You have claws, and you know how to draw blood. But you are fighting an American street war, while Eleanor’s old benefactors are moving with global cartels. You cannot protect Leo, Maya, Toby, and Chloe alone. Not against what is coming."

"What is coming?" I demanded, refusing to back down.

Alexander reached out, his thumb lightly grazing the edge of my jawline before I could pull away. His skin was warm, his touch firm and shockingly steady.

"My arrival has broken the thirty-year seal," Alexander said grimly. "Arthur Vance Sr. didn't just hide me from Eleanor. He hid me from the German banking consortium that backed his father in 1944. They believe the quadruplets hold the biometric encryption keys to the original gold reserves of the Vance Trust. Within forty-eight hours, Chicago will become a hunting ground."
