Chapter 62 - Sovereign Base Alpha

The wheels of our private jet hit the tarmac with a violent screech, bouncing across concrete runway strips that had been cut deep into a barren Scottish peninsula overlooking the frigid North Sea.
Outside, rain lashed against the fuselage in sheets. Towering concrete sea-walls rose on three sides, surrounding a brutalist compound constructed entirely of reinforced rebar and blast-resistant steel. There were no flags, no company insignias, no signs of life except for heavily armed tactical contractors in slate-grey armor lining the edge of the runway, their automatic rifles slung across their chests in low-ready positions.
"Engines shut down," the pilot announced grimly over the PA. "They’ve surrounded the landing gear with hydraulic wheel locks. We aren’t going anywhere, ma'am."
"Alexander," I said calmly, smoothing the lapels of my tailored charcoal overcoat. "Check your sidearm."
"Concealed ceramic pistol, two spare magazines," Alexander replied, his scarred face grim. "They'll scan us the second the stairs drop."
"Let them scan. Chloe, Leo—stay between Alexander and Liam. Maya, you hold the Zurich hard drive. Do not let go of it under any circumstances."
"I won't, Mom," Maya said, her chin lifted high.
The hydraulic hiss of the cabin door releasing broke the silence. Cold, salt-choked air flooded the cabin, carrying the scent of jet fuel and wet stone. I stepped out onto the boarding stairs first, looking down at the small army waiting on the tarmac.
Parting the ranks of armed contractors, a young man walked forward.
He wore no tactical gear—only a high-collared black wool coat that brushed his shins and heavy combat boots. He was tall, lean, and carried the striking aristocratic features of the Vance bloodline: high cheekbones, sharp jaw, and eyes so pale blue they bordered on translucent. But unlike Arthur, whose eyes were filled with paranoid rot, this boy’s gaze was utterly devoid of human emotion. It was the gaze of an apex predator raised inside a cage.
"Welcome to Sovereign Base Alpha, Katherine," Tristan Vance said, stopping at the base of the stairs. He didn't offer a hand. He didn't smile. "Father’s letters described you as an irritating domestic nuisance with no appreciation for sovereign continuity. I see he grossly underestimated your capacity for violence."
"Arthur underestimated a great many things," I replied, descending the metal steps with slow, measured authority until I stood on the rain-slicked asphalt just three paces from him. "Starting with the assumption that a twelve-million-dollar check could buy my silence. Who are you?"
Tristan’s gaze flicked past me, scanning the four children descending behind me. His eyes lingered on Liam, then Maya, before returning to mine.
"I am what Arthur Vance spent twenty-two years engineering while Eleanor was playing society matron with her bought-and-paid-for bastard Julian," Tristan said quietly. "I am Project Obsidian. The pure bloodline. The military, strategic, and financial sovereign of the Vance legacy."

He stepped closer, his voice dropping into a chilling whisper: "And you, Katherine, are currently standing on my sovereign soil."
