Chapter 49 - The London Siege

By 8:00 AM, the City of London was engulfed in a financial tempest.

Rain lashed against the neoclassical columns of the Royal Exchange. Inside the sovereign clearing house, trading terminals were flashing violent red. The global markets had opened to a nightmare: Christian Vance had initiated the first wave of the Obsidian Protocol. Over fifteen billion dollars in synthetic short positions had been dumped onto the market, triggering automated sell-offs across London, Frankfurt, and Tokyo.

In the private viewing gallery of the Exchange, Eleanor Vance stood beside Christian. She had traded her ruined velvet gown for an immaculate charcoal bespoke suit, her neck adorned with pearls, though the dark circles beneath her heavily powdered eyes betrayed her sheer exhaustion.

Christian’s right arm was immobilized in a black carbon-fiber sling, but his left hand rested calmly on the rail of the gallery, watching the ticker boards crash below.

"It’s working," Eleanor whispered, her voice laced with manic desperation. "Katherine’s holding companies have lost eight billion in value in thirty minutes. The banks will issue the margin seizure notice by noon!"

"She thought she won in Geneva," Christian sneered, cold triumph flashing in his dark eyes. "She doesn't understand that an empire isn't built on courts and bloodlines. It's built on pure, unadulterated terror. Let the world burn, Mother. We will buy the ashes for pennies on the pound."

"Are you certain of that, Christian?"

The voice rang out from the double mahogany doors of the private gallery.

Christian and Eleanor spun around, their security guards instantly drawing concealed weapons.

I stepped into the room, dressed in an ivory wool coat that stood in stark contrast to the darkness of the morning. Alexander walked behind me, followed by four high-ranking officials from the Financial Conduct Authority and a squad of armed officers from the City of London Police.

"You're too late, Katherine!" Eleanor cackled, pointing toward the colossal digital display hanging over the trading floor. "Look at the boards! You are finished! By noon, your entire sovereign inheritance will belong to Christian!"

"Look again, Eleanor," I said calmly, checking my wristwatch. "It's 8:15 AM."

Down on the floor, a sudden, deafening siren blared. The red tickers abruptly froze.

Then, in a blinding cascade of light, every single short position reversed. The trading algorithms halted. Across the massive screens, the words flashed in gigantic gold letters:

*OBSIDIAN PROTOCOL TERMINATED.*

*COUNTER-POSITION ENGAGED: SEIZURE OF CONTRARIAN ASSETS.*

*LIQUIDATION TARGET: VANCE GLOBAL HOLDINGS LIMITED.*

Christian’s face went ghastly white. "What... what did you do?"

"Julian gave me the cipher," I said, taking two deliberate steps forward, watching the sheer horror dawn across their faces. "Your automated margin calls have just been routed directly into your personal trust accounts. You didn't bankrupt me, Christian. You just authorized the total liquidation of every asset Eleanor hid for you over the last twenty-five years."

May you like

"Julian?" Eleanor gasped, clutching her chest, her eyes bulging with disbelief. "Julian betrayed us?"

"You betrayed him first," I answered coldly. "You taught your sons that family is nothing more than currency to be spent. You shouldn't be surprised when they cash you in."
