Chapter 40 - The Conclave of Shadows

Three weeks later, the private ice-breaker vessel *The Sovereign Sovereign* docked under the cover of a blinding alpine blizzard at the private pier of the Chateau de Pregny on the shores of Lake Geneva.

The air was bitterly cold, freezing the breath in our lungs as we stepped onto the snow-dusted cobblestones.

Surrounding us were sixty elite operators of the Iron Cadre, clad in sub-zero tactical armor, their weapons concealed beneath heavy dark overcoats. Between Alexander and me walked our four children, dressed in bespoke charcoal wool coats, their heads held high. Leo walked with his shoulders back, his little hand holding Lucas’s, while Maya and Chloe flanked my sides. They were no longer the terrified children who had hidden beneath a nursery desk in Chicago. They were princes and princesses of an empire preparing for war.

The towering iron gates of the Chateau swung open with a mournful, metallic groan.

We entered the Grand Chamber of the Directorate.

The hall was vast, medieval, illuminated only by torches burning in iron sconces along pillars of black Swiss granite. Around a colossal crescent-shaped table of blackened oak sat twelve elderly men and women, draped in ceremonial robes of midnight blue—the Patriarchs of the Old World.

And standing at the center of the marble floor, dressed in an immaculate gown of emerald velvet and draped in family emeralds that had belonged to sovereign queens, stood Eleanor Vance.

She did not look sick. She did not look defeated. She looked like a spider reigning over its web.

Next to her stood a young man—perhaps twenty-five years old—whose face sent a cold shockwave through my spine. He had the same aristocratic jawline as Julian, but his eyes were sharp, calculating, and filled with a cold, terrifying intellect.

"Welcome to the end of your little crusade, Katherine," Eleanor’s voice echoed off the granite vaults, dripping with triumphant malice. "Did you really think Julian was my greatest masterpiece? Julian was merely the sacrificial lamb—the distraction to keep you busy while my true heir was groomed in the shadows."

She laid a manicured hand on the young man’s shoulder.

"Meet Julian's elder brother, Christian Vance," Eleanor smiled, her eyes flashing with venomous triumph. "The true sovereign heir. And according to the Directorate’s charter, Katherine... an illegitimate bloodline cannot challenge a firstborn son."

Before Alexander could speak, the massive iron doors behind us slammed shut.

From the high gallery above, the distinct, rhythmic mechanical sound of sixty tactical rifles chambering rounds echoed through the hall.

The twelve Patriarchs at the table did not move. They sat like stone gargoyles, their cold, lifeless eyes staring down at my four children.

Then, Christian Vance stepped forward, pulling a heavy silver ledger from his coat, his eyes locking onto mine with a mocking smirk.

"You have five seconds to surrender the children to the Directorate's custody, ex-sister-in-law," Christian whispered, "or this chamber becomes your tomb."
