Chapter 39 - The Geneva Summons

My fingers tightened around the heavy parchment, crumpling the edges until the paper tore.

"She isn't in that sanitarium, is she?" I asked, my voice dangerously steady.

"She escaped four hours before Henrik struck the Lake Forest estate," Alexander answered, his jaw tight as granite. "Her doctors were found poisoned in the facility’s secure ward. The woman who occupied that bed for the past two weeks was a body double—a terminally ill patient surgically altered to resemble Eleanor Vance."

I stared at the letter, my mind racing through every move, every countermove, every audit I had run over the past six months. Eleanor Vance had always been three moves ahead in cruelty, but this was beyond corporate sociopathy. This was dynastic madness.

"What is the 'failsafe' she mentions?" I demanded, looking straight into Alexander's dark eyes. "What did she do to my children?"

Alexander closed his eyes for a brief, agonizing second. When he opened them, the raw vulnerability in his expression terrified me more than a hundred armed mercenaries ever could.

"When our firstborn, Leo, was born seven years ago in that private hospital in Bern," Alexander confessed in a raw whisper, "Eleanor was the sole guarantor of the medical trust. Under the guise of stem-cell banking for genetic preservation, she deposited their sovereign biological markers into the deep vaults of the Geneva Directorate. Under the Directorate's ancient charter, any heir's claim can be challenged through a 'Purity Conclave.' If the claimants do not appear in person before the Council of Patriarchs to verify their biological sovereignty against the master vault... their trust status is classified as 'Contaminated.'"

"And what happens to a Contaminated heir?"

"The Directorate issues an international liquidation mandate," Alexander said grimly. "Every sovereign family on Earth is contractually bound to eliminate the claimant to protect the integrity of the global banking system. They won't just send mercenaries. They will send sovereign armies."

I turned toward the glass doors leading to the children's bedroom. Leo, Maya, Chloe, and Lucas were sleeping peacefully, completely innocent of the terrifying weight of the blood that flowed through their veins.

"Then we go to Geneva," I said without an ounce of hesitation.

Alexander gripped my wrist, his grip urgent. "You don't understand what the Directorate is, Katherine. It isn't a boardroom. It is a cabal of ancient families who have controlled global debt since the fall of Constantinople. In that room, your Chicago victory means nothing. You will be walking directly into Eleanor's spider's web."

"Let her spin it," I said, pulling my arm free and stepping toward him until our chests were mere inches apart. "She thought twelve million dollars was enough to throw me away. She thought four children would keep me weak. She thought she could take their lives to save her dying throne. I am not going to Geneva to plead for their inheritance, Alexander."

My eyes locked onto his with an icy, unyielding fury.

"I am going to Geneva to burn the Directorate to the ground."
