Chapter 15 - The Lioness at the Podium

By ten-forty-five, a forest of microphones bristled on the wide granite steps outside Vance Tower. Hundreds of reporters, camera crews, and curious onlookers had choked the plaza, their collective whispers creating a low hum against the roar of mid-morning traffic.

At exactly eleven o'clock, the heavy revolving doors opened.

I walked out into the crisp sunlight alone. I wore no jewelry except for a plain platinum watch, my dark hair pulled back in a sharp, uncompromising ponytail. Behind me, two aides carried a single, unassuming steel briefcase.

The crowd erupted in a barrage of camera flashes and shouting journalists.

"Ms. Ross! Are the allegations true?"

"Is Julian Vance the biological father of the four heirs?"

"Are you running Vance Holdings under false pretenses?"

I stepped up to the podium, adjusting the microphone with one calm hand. I didn't raise my voice. I simply waited. The absolute authority in my gaze was so cold, so unwavering, that within ten seconds, the frantic shouting died down into dead silence.

"Good morning," I began, my voice amplified clearly across the entire square. "Three hours ago, a defamatory story was published alleging that my four children are not of Vance lineage, questioning their legitimacy and suggesting this company's leadership was won through deceit."

I turned slightly and signaled to the aides. They opened the briefcase, removing four thick, blue-stamped binders and handing them to me.

"These," I said, holding up the documents so every camera could catch the state seals, "are court-certified, double-blind genomic paternity analyses conducted by the Federal Institute of Forensic Genetics. Julian Vance's DNA is an absolute, incontrovertible match for all four of my children."

A collective murmur rolled through the journalists.

"Julian Vance knew this," I continued, leaning closer into the microphone. "His mother, Eleanor Vance, knew this. But because my children were born through a difficult pregnancy that cost me my physical health, Eleanor Vance decided we were an inconvenience. She demanded an heir from a fabricated aristocratic lineage, prompting her son to abandon his true family for a lie."

The plaza was completely breathless.

"As of nine-thirty this morning, my legal counsel has filed a two-hundred-million-dollar civil defamation lawsuit against Damien Cross, Cross Media Syndicate, and Julian Vance personally. Furthermore, because Julian Vance accepted payment while knowing these statements were false in an attempt to manipulate Vance Holdings’ public stock price, we have formally submitted an indictment packet to the Department of Justice for criminal market manipulation."

I let the words hang in the air like a guillotine.

"Let me be unmistakably clear to the city of Chicago," I said, my voice cutting through the silence like a diamond edge. "You may attack my business. You may challenge my deals. But the moment you lay a single finger on my children's honor, I will not rest until your name, your fortune, and your legacy are burned to the ground. Good day."

I turned and walked back into the tower, leaving behind a chaotic storm of flashbulbs and shouting reporters scrambling to break the story of the decade.
