Chapter 11 - A Sovereign Dawn

The latch clicked softly into place as I shut the heavy wooden door of the guest cottage behind me. Inside, the world was bathed in the warm, amber glow of a single low-wattage hallway lamp. After the venomous confrontation in the main mansion’s foyer, the stillness here felt holy.
I slipped off my heels and walked barefoot across the hand-woven rug toward the nursery suite. Pushing the door open an inch at a time, I stood in the doorway and watched my four children sleep. Lucas and Oliver were sprawled in their twin beds like miniature starfish, their soft, even breathing the most soothing melody I had heard in two years. In the adjoining room through the arched connector, five-year-old Sophia was clutching her velvet bear, her brow relaxed, while little Mia was curled tightly beneath her duvet, safe from the storm that had raged outside.
Two years ago, Julian had looked down at these four innocent souls and declared them collateral damage in his pursuit of social ascension. His mother, Eleanor, had sneered that common blood could never share the Vance crest. They had cast us out into the freezing Chicago rain with a insulting check and the mocking promise that we would be forgotten within a week.
Now, the entire Vance empire belonged to me.
My phone vibrated silently against my palm. I slipped into the cottage study and answered.
"Evelyn," Marcus’s voice came through, steady and sharp despite the late hour. "Eleanor Vance just left the estate grounds. Security escorted her town car to the perimeter gates. She tried calling three board members on her way out, but none of them picked up. They know who holds the voting shares now."
"And Julian?" I asked, looking out the study window toward the darkened lake.
"He's still holed up in that penthouse on Michigan Avenue. The banks froze his personal lines of credit twenty minutes ago following your board decree. By sunrise, his cards will decline for a cup of coffee."
"Good," I whispered. "Have the forensic accounting team at Vance Tower by six sharp. I want every offshore account, every hidden trust, and every ghost payroll Eleanor created laid bare on my desk before the market opens."
"Understood. Evelyn... get some rest. Today was a massacre, but tomorrow is the reconstruction."
May you like
I hung up, looking toward the horizon where the first pale slivers of dawn were cutting through the night clouds. Rest was a luxury for people who were finished. I was only just getting started.
