Chapter 18 - The Cost of Betrayal

Julian Vance sat in the dingy back corner of a low-end tavern on the south side of Chicago, staring into a half-empty glass of cheap whiskey. His tailored suit was stained, his luxury watch had been sold two days ago to pay for a cheap motel room, and his hands were shaking uncontrollably.

Across from him sat an operative wearing a nondescript leather jacket—an emissary of Damien Cross.

"You're late," Julian muttered, wiping his mouth with the back of his sleeve. "Did you bring the rest of the payment?"

The man smiled thinly, pulling an encrypted thumb drive from his pocket and rolling it between his fingers. "Cross doesn't pay for empty threats, Julian. The press conference destroyed the paternity angle. The lawsuit is already draining our syndicate's legal budget. If you want the remaining four hundred thousand, you need to deliver what you promised: the proprietary source code for Vance Tech’s upcoming municipal clean-energy grid."

Julian swallowed hard. His heart hammered in his chest. Stealing corporate proprietary code was federal industrial espionage. If he was caught, there would be no high-priced defense lawyers to save him.

"I still have the backup server credentials," Julian whispered, his eyes darting frantically around the dim bar. "My father created a hidden administrative bypass before he died. It was never revoked. I can pull the complete blueprints onto this drive in ten minutes."

"Do it," the operative said, pushing a laptop across the sticky wooden table. "Do it, and Cross will have you on a private jet to Zurich by midnight, with half a million in an untraceable offshore account. You'll be free of Evelyn forever."

The thought of Evelyn—commanding, victorious, looking down at him from the heights he had once occupied—was the spark that ignited his desperate malice. "Give it to me," Julian growled, grabbing the laptop.

His fingers flew across the keyboard, entering the complex strings of his late father's administrative protocol. A progress bar appeared on the screen: *ACCESSING CLASSIFIED MUNICIPAL INFRASTRUCTURE FILES... 40%... 70%... DOWNLOAD COMPLETE.*

"I did it," Julian gasped, a delirious grin breaking across his hollow face. "I have it. All of it."

He reached for the thumb drive, but before his fingers could close around it, the front and rear doors of the tavern burst open with thunderous force.

"FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION! NOBODY MOVE!"

Shouting agents in tactical vests flooded the room, assault rifles raised. Patrons screamed, diving to the floor. The operative across from Julian moved to grab the laptop, but an agent tackled him to the ground in an instant.

Julian froze, his hands raised in the air, his eyes wide with uncomprehending horror.

Through the tavern door stepped Marcus, flanked by the lead supervisory agent of the FBI's Chicago field office. Marcus looked at Julian with an expression of pure, cold pity.

"Did you really think Evelyn didn't know about your father's administrative bypass, Julian?" Marcus said calmly as an agent forced Julian's face down onto the wooden table, ratcheting heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. "She left that server active as honeypot surveillance three days ago. Every keystroke you entered was transmitted directly to federal cyber-crimes."

"No... no!" Julian shrieked, struggling against the cuffs as he was dragged to his feet. "Marcus, wait! Tell Evelyn! We have children together! She can't do this to the father of her children!"

Marcus walked up to him, looking Julian dead in the eye.

"You ceased being their father the day you threw them into the gutter to protect your fake inheritance," Marcus said softly. "The father of Evelyn's children died in that courtroom. You're just a common thief facing twenty-five years in federal penitentiary."

As Julian was dragged out screaming into the flashing blue lights of the police convoy, Marcus pulled out his phone and typed a single message:
