Chapter 54 - The Broken Matriarch's Ledger

Before we could strike Baden-Baden, I needed the final key to Arthur's shadow banking apparatus. And that key was locked inside the shattered mind of Eleanor Vance.

She had been transported to the subterranean security suite beneath the Regent's Park mansion. Stripped of her haute couture, dressed in an oversized gray prison jumpsuit, Eleanor looked twenty years older. The arrogant matriarch who had offered me twelve million dollars to abandon my children in Chapter 1 was completely gone. In her place sat a hollowed-out husk, muttering incoherently to the empty corners of the room.

The steel door clicked open, and I stepped inside, accompanied only by Alexander.

Eleanor flinched as the harsh overhead light hit her face. "Katherine... did you bring the poison? Is that what Arthur sent you to do?"

"Arthur didn't send me," I said, pulling an aluminum chair across the concrete floor and sitting directly in front of her. "I am here because you are going to tell me how Arthur funded his Eastern operations for thirty years."

Eleanor began to laugh, a wheezing, desperate sound. "You think you can fight him? Arthur built the shadow banking system that funded political coups across three continents! The money he gave Julian and me was just pocket change—a decoy to keep the Western regulators looking at London and New York!"

"I don't care about his coups, Eleanor," I said, leaning forward, my eyes boring into hers. "Every sovereign protocol has a fail-safe. You were his chief executor for three decades. When he disappeared into the Alps, he gave you an administrative ledger—the Obsidian Contingency. Where is it?"

Eleanor stopped laughing. Her pale lips trembled, and her eyes darted toward the surveillance camera in the ceiling corner.

"If I tell you... he will skin me alive," she whispered. "He has people everywhere. In the German chancellor's cabinet. In the Swiss Federal Council. In the Vatican bank."

"Arthur has already discarded you," I reminded her mercilessly. "You saw him step over Christian’s dead body. He called you an incompetent caretaker. When he takes full control in Baden-Baden tomorrow night, where do you think you will be? In an unmarked grave in the Black Forest."

A shudder ran through her entire spine. The reality of her absolute worthlessness to Arthur finally broke the last lock on her silence.

"The ledger... isn't a book," Eleanor whispered, leaning in, her breath smelling of bitter bile. "It’s a bearer bond vault key. Disguised as a family heirloom."

"Which heirloom?"

"The gold locket Julian gave you on your third wedding anniversary," Eleanor choked out. "The one you threw into the Thames after the divorce."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "I didn't throw it into the Thames. I threw it into the antique safe at Julian's ancestral penthouse in Belgravia."

Eleanor stared at me, her eyes widening in sheer horror. "The Belgravia penthouse... Arthur’s vanguard swept that place two hours ago. If they found that locket, Katherine... they already hold the unilateral override to dismantle your entire financial network before dawn."
