Chapter 83 - The Children's Counter-Grid

"Lock down the blast doors immediately, Liam," I commanded, sprinting down the stairwell of Vanguard Tower toward the private executive elevators, Alexander matching my stride step for step. "Cut the fiber-optic uplink. Go completely black on all external communications!"
"Already tried, Mom," Lucas’s voice chimed in through the secondary channel. At eight years old, Lucas possessed an intuitive understanding of electronic warfare that rivaled national defense contractors. "The signal isn't coming through the fiber lines. It’s a low-frequency ground-wave transmission broadcasting from a mobile relay inside the London municipal power grid. They anticipated our kill-switch."
"Can you jam it?" Alexander asked sharply over the tactical link.
"Leo is working on the localized signal inverter right now," Lucas answered calmly, though I could hear the hum of heavy cooling fans in the background. "Mia is sitting with the thermal monitors. Mom, we have company outside."
My heart hammered against my ribs like a sledgehammer. "What company?"
"Four unmarked armored transport vans just entered the perimeter of the Mayfair estate," little Mia’s sweet, terrifyingly composed six-year-old voice came through the speaker. "They’re wearing black tactical gear with silver wolf emblems on their shoulders, Mommy. They have breaching charges. They’re at the perimeter gate."
"Arthur’s personal guard," Alexander cursed under his breath, drawing a fresh magazine from his tactical vest and slamming it into his sidearm. "The Iron Wolves. They were Arthur's personal extraction unit before Geneva. They don't take prisoners, Katherine."
We burst out of the executive lift into the ground floor lobby of Vanguard Tower. The floor was still strewn with the broken glass and spent casings from our assault an hour earlier. Outside, the London streets were unnaturally silent, the rain turning the asphalt into black mirrors under the amber streetlights.
"Marcus!" Alexander barked to his second-in-command waiting by our armored Suburban. "Prep the convoy! We move to Mayfair now! Full lethal authorization!"
"Hold on, Alexander," I commanded, raising my hand.
I closed my eyes for three seconds, forcing the violent panic in my chest into a cold, diamond-hard focus. A mother cannot afford terror. Terror makes mistakes. Precision kills.
"Liam," I spoke clearly into the mic. "Do not engage the perimeter gates. If they have shaped charges, they will blow through the steel in forty seconds. Trigger Protocol Echo."
There was a split second of silence on the line, followed by the sound of a key turning.
"Protocol Echo?" Lucas asked, a faint trace of dark excitement in his young voice. "The flood protocol?"
"The underground sewer diversions and the high-voltage perimeter grounding," I said coldly. "If Arthur Vance wants to steal my children, let him see what kind of fortress those children built for themselves."
"Activating now," Liam confirmed.

Across the comms, we heard the distant, muffled *CRACK* of high-explosive charges detonating at the gates of our Mayfair sanctuary.
