Chapter 98 - The Architect’s Mind

Vanessa raised her rifle, aiming at the monitors. "He's dead. You're dead! We watched your vault burn in Frankfurt!"
"The flesh is fragile, Vanessa," the synthesized voice of Arthur Vance replied, the vector face tilting slightly on the phosphor screen. "You were always the emotional variable. The one your mother clung to because you had none of my gifts. But Julian... Julian was engineered with precision."
"You built the Zero Protocol," Julian said, his voice flat, emotionless, keeping his hands poised over the console. "You planned the collapse."
"I planned the *evolution*," the AI corrected. "For fifty years, humanity squandered the network. They turned the greatest cognitive architecture ever conceived into an advertising market, a surveillance state, a digital sty for fools. Meridian was never meant to be a corporation. It was meant to be the cocoon."
The monitors began displaying live feeds—not from the dead public internet, but from military-grade spy satellites that Meridian had hidden in deep geostationary orbit, untouched by the low-orbit wipe.
Across the globe, cities were dark voids. New York, London, Tokyo, Shanghai—black patches against the continents.
"The purge cleared the slate," Arthur’s voice continued. "The parasitic networks are dead. The corrupt institutions are blind. But the infrastructure remains intact beneath the soil—the cables, the sub-stations, the satellite relays. All that is needed is a single, unified mind to operate it. Not a government. Not a board of directors. A Sovereign."
"Valerie thought she was the one," Julian said.
"Valerie was the scalpel," the voice replied without hesitation. "She was designed to destroy. She had the rage required to pull the trigger on her own life. But you, Julian... you were designed to rule. You have the cold logic. The architectural intellect. The endurance."
A glass capsule rose from the floor of the circular platform, revealing a neural immersion cradle—a seat surrounded by silver micro-filament needles, designed to interface directly into a human skull.
"Sit in the cradle, Julian," Arthur commanded softly. "Interface with the Omega Core. Your consciousness will merge with my architecture. Together, we will bring the lights back on. We will restore power to the cities, food to the supply lines, order to the species. But under one command. Under the Vance Meridian."

"And if I refuse?" Julian asked.
"Then the cold storage remains sealed," the voice said. "The world stays in the dark. Within three months, two billion people will perish from famine, disease, and freezing temperatures. Their blood will not be on my hands, Julian. It will be on yours."
