Chapter 10 - The Digital Vanguard

The launch of Project Aether was scheduled for 10:00 AM the following morning.

By nightfall, the conference room had been cleaned, the drama of the afternoon scrubbed away by corporate janitorial crews as if it had never occurred. The legal machinery was moving with ruthless efficiency: Vanessa was being held without bail at the central county jail due to flight risk concerns, and Mom had returned to an empty house that no longer belonged to her, packing boxes under the watchful eyes of private security sent to preserve the asset.

I remained on the fifty-eighth floor long after the rest of the engineering team had gone home to rest before the launch.

The sprawling office was silent, save for the ambient hum of the server racks and the faint patter of rain against the reinforced glass. Through the dark windows, the city lights sparkled like a field of fallen stars. For the first time in my life, I felt completely, undeniably free.

The weight of my family’s envy, the constant pressure to shrink myself so they wouldn't feel small, the fear of their financial sabotage—it was all gone. Cut away like necrotic tissue.

I sat at my terminal, running a final pre-flight verification on the core neural routing nodes. Everything was green. The latency was hovering at an astonishing zero-point-two milliseconds across all distributed channels. In twelve hours, this software would go live, connecting thousands of autonomous logistics hubs across three continents.

Then, at precisely 11:42 PM, a notification pinged in the lower-right corner of my primary screen.

It was not an internal Meridian alert.

It was an encrypted incoming packet hitting my personal university research repository—the private, air-gapped sandbox where I had developed the earliest prototypes of the Aether architecture two years ago.

I frowned, leaning forward. My university account had been decommissioned that morning after graduation. No one should have had the cryptographic key to ping that node.

I opened a command terminal and traced the routing path.

The packet had bounced through nine proxy servers across Eastern Europe before terminating at an IP address located just across the river—in the downtown headquarters of Vanguard Innovations, Meridian’s fiercest competitor in the autonomous infrastructure market.

A cold prickle of caution traveled up the back of my neck.

I isolated the payload in a virtual machine and decrypted the text string.

Attached to the message was a file: a six-hundred-page complete system memory dump of my private undergraduate development environment. It contained raw drafts of my proprietary algorithms, early schematic diagrams, and uncompiled source code dated six months ago.

And beneath the file was a short, typed message:

*Julian,*

*Your sister was an amateur, but she had remarkably good access to your bedroom desk during your senior year. Did you really think she only took a few screenshots of your offer letter?*

*Three weeks ago, Vanessa sold us your entire development drive for forty thousand dollars to pay off her sports car debt. We didn't understand the mathematics then. But now that Meridian announced your Aether launch, every piece of the puzzle fits.*

*We don't need to sue you. We don't need to call the police.*

*Tomorrow at 9:59 AM—one minute before Arthur Vance takes the stage to launch Project Aether—we will publish this entire repository under an open-source public license on the global developer registry. Your breakthrough will be common property. Your five-year contract will be worthless. Meridian’s patent exclusivity will vaporize before the market opens.*

*Unless you do one simple thing:*

*Upload the administrative master keys to our server before midnight.*

I stared at the glowing green letters on the dark monitor.

Vanessa hadn't just shredded my ceremonial paper in a fit of jealous rage yesterday morning. The scene in the auditorium hadn't been an act of spontaneous fury—it had been a desperate distraction.

May you like

She had already sold the crown jewels weeks ago.
