Chapter 70 - Fractured Sovereignty

Pressurized liquid nitrogen erupted from the severed pipes in a blinding, sub-zero blizzard. The freezing gas instantly flash-froze the optical sensors and neural cables lining the floor, setting off a cascade of catastrophic electrical arcs that ripped through the life-support bays.
"No!" David’s calm facade shattered into visceral rage. He lunged forward, drawing a compact ceramic weapon from his coat.
Vanessa moved faster. She threw herself into a low tackle, driving David into the frosted deck. The ceramic pistol discharged, the round shattering the glass of Pod Twelve. Amniotic fluid flooded the walkway, washing over Julian’s boots as the clone inside tumbled out, lifeless and unformed.
Julian didn't hesitate. He ignored the physical struggle on the deck and sprinted straight for the elevated control dais at the rear of the chamber.
The central terminal was glowing with the furious pulse of the global synchronization sequence: *97% COMPLETE.*
Julian jammed his wrist terminal into the primary data bus. "Initiate parity override: Null-Set Alpha!"
*ERROR: OVERRIDE REQUIRES ARCHITECT BIOMETRIC VALIDATION.*
Behind him, David hurled Vanessa off him with surprising, desperate strength, his eyes wild as he saw Julian at the console. "Julian! Stop! If you sever the root node now, the global markets won't just reset—they will collapse! Every supply line, every power grid, every communications satellite tied to the lattice will go dark!"
"Then they'll rebuild in the daylight!" Julian shouted back.
David charged up the steps of the dais, his combat knife drawn. Julian spun, catching David’s wrist with his left arm, their faces inches apart.
For the first time, Julian saw the naked terror in his father's eyes. The god who had spent three decades weaving the fate of nations was now just an old man fighting for control of a keyboard.
"You can't live without the system, Julian!" David snarled, his breath hot against Julian's face. "You are the system!"
"No," Julian whispered. "I'm the system crash."
Julian pulled David’s arm forward, violently slamming his father's right hand down onto the biometric optical scanner.
*ARCHITECT BIOMETRIC CONFIRMED.*

Vanessa, bleeding from her temple, dragged herself up the steps and slammed her hand directly down on the execution key.
