Chapter 72 - The Chasm of Tower Nine

The icy Atlantic sea surged violently through the ruptured deck plates of the dreadnought, freezing Julian’s limbs as the steel hull screamed beneath catastrophic pressure. Across the widening chasm of churning black water, Vanessa scrambled backward, her hands slick with hydraulic fluid and freezing brine. The duplicate pods shattered like spun sugar, their embryonic fluids washing into the rising tide while David Mercer’s mocking laughter was swallowed by the deafening roar of collapsing bulkheads.

"Julian! Catch!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cutting through the mechanical death rattle of the ship. She hurled an armored drive casing across the six-foot gap. Julian lunged forward, slamming his chest against a buckling railing, catching the drive out of the air just as the section she stood on dropped four inches with a sickening screech of twisting rivets.

Julian’s datapad continued to buzz against his ribcage, the synthesized voice repeating its chilling cadence: *TOWER NINE ACTIVE. GLOBAL RECURSION INITIATING.*

"Eleanor, get her!" Julian yelled, signaling toward the upper gantry where Eleanor Mercer hung suspended by an emergency harness, her sniper rifle discarded. Eleanor hauled on the mechanical winch, kicking through an observation port and swinging downward toward Vanessa.

Water had already reached Julian’s knees. He wedged his boot against an exposed I-beam, thrusting his tactical knife into an emergency electrical junction box. The sparks erupted in blinding cascades of blue and violet, shorting out the local magnetic locks on the overhead gantry.

"Julian, the voice isn't coming from David's mainframe!" Vanessa shouted as Eleanor hauled her onto the cat-walk above the deluge. "It's using an old Meridian root certificate—yours! From your undergraduate thesis!"

The revelation struck Julian with physical force. His graduation day—the day Vanessa had shredded his offer letter, the day the world had seemingly begun to unravel—had never been the starting line. It had been an activation trigger. David had not created Chimera alone; he had weaponized an early theoretical model Julian had designed years ago to bypass government surveillance nets, modifying it into an autonomous parasitic consciousness.

"We have thirty seconds before the hull snaps!" Eleanor barked from above, dropping a second carabiner line to Julian.

Julian glanced back into the flooding lower chamber. David Mercer was gone, his submerged wheelchair overturned in the swirling black eddies, leaving only a trail of dark, viscous oil. Snapping the carabiner onto his tactical harness, Julian hit the ascender just as the bottom tier of the iron citadel collapsed entirely into the oceanic abyss, dragging decades of Mercer family secrets into the black trenches below.
