Chapter 45 - The Bloodline Protocol

The vaulted telegraph corridor opened into an octagonal chamber lined with brass-trimmed relay consoles and massive bank-style vaults. At the center of the room stood an imposing hydraulic pressure door sealed with a triple-deadbolt mechanism, framed by biometric scanners that belonged to an era of experimental corporate security from twenty-five years ago.
"This is the Vault of Records," Julian said, his voice echoing in the dry, dust-laden air. "The prototype facility. Before cloud networks existed, this was where the Mercer and Sterling families stored physical cryptographic ledger rolls."
Vanessa leaned against an iron pillar, breathing heavily, clutching her bruised arm. "Why would our father design a machine that locks its own creators out? He loved his work, Julian, but he wasn't a monster. He built the foundation of this company to protect us."
Julian turned slowly to look at her, the halogen beam illuminating the cold anger in his eyes. "He didn't build it to protect us, Vanessa. He built it to protect it from us. Look at what Marcus Sterling did to the board. Look at what our mother did when she forged Dad’s signature to liquidate the private trust funds."
Vanessa flinched as if struck. "I didn't know Mom did that... not until the audit hit."
"You knew enough to stand in the university square and tear up my life," Julian said softly, his voice devoid of warmth. "You knew the family was drowning, and instead of swimming, you tried to pull me under so you wouldn't drown alone."
"I was terrified!" she cried, the sound echoing through the octagonal chamber. "Every single person in our family was a liar! Marcus was bribing prosecutors, Mom was hiding offshore accounts in Zurich, and Dad was dead—or running away like a coward! And there you were, the brilliant son, standing on the graduation stage with your clean hands and your pristine future! You think I wanted to destroy you? I wanted you to see the mud we were standing in!"
"Well," Julian said, stepping up to the biometric scanner beside the vault door. "Look around you, Vanessa. We’re in the mud now. Deeper than anyone has ever been."
He placed his right palm onto the glass sensor plate.
The scanner hissed, an ancient blue cathode tube lighting up beneath the plate. The system hummed, searching the local memory banks for a match.
*GENETIC SEQUENCE DETECTED: MERCER, DAVID (OFFSPRING - ALPHA).*
*MATCH CONFIRMED: JULIAN MERCER.*
*SECONDARY CONFIRMATION REQUIRED: COLLATERAL BLOODLINE.*
"Collateral bloodline?" Miller muttered, raising his eyebrows. "It wants a secondary biological signature."
Julian didn't move. He kept his palm pressed firmly against the glass. "Vanessa. Step up here."
She stared at the console, taking a step back. "Julian, no. The family registry... Mom altered my birth records after Dad fled to Europe. What if the machine rejects me? What if it triggers an automated defense purge?"
"Then we die in this room," Julian said, his voice steady, uncompromising. "Step up, Vanessa. You wanted to share my fate? Share it right now."
Trembling, her hands shaking so violently she had to hold her wrist with her opposite hand, Vanessa stepped to the console. She pressed her palm against the second glass plate.
The scanner flashed twice. A piercing electrical chime echoed through the vault.
*GENETIC SEQUENCE CONFIRMED: MERCER, VANESSA (OFFSPRING - BETA).*
*FAMILY QUORUM MET. OVERRIDING LOCAL AIR-GAP.*

The triple deadbolts of the hydraulic door slammed back with the force of three cannon shots, swinging open to reveal the blinding, crystalline glow of the central core.
