Chapter 75 - The Firstborn Protocol

Deep within the subterranean complex beneath the quarry, the blast doors were already unsealed. Hydraulic fluid dripped from ruptured seals, pooling around thick, braided copper cables that snaked across the floor like giant serpents. The facility was humming—a low, sub-audible vibration that resonated through the soles of Julian's boots, vibrating the iron in his blood.
"There's no dust here," Eleanor noted quietly, sweeping her weapon across an empty security station. "This place was maintained. Recently."
Julian led them into the central control amphitheater. Unlike the sterile, chrome-and-glass architecture of Meridian's fifty-eighth floor, this room was a relic of the late Cold War: heavy steel consoles, CRT monitors glowing with amber text, and massive reel-to-reel magnetic tape drives slowly turning in perfect synchronization.
In the center of the room sat an open glass enclosure containing a single biological terminal—an advanced life-support cradle identical to the pods from the dreadnought, but far older. It had been opened from the inside.
"The registry," Julian commanded, sliding into the primary operator chair. The mechanical keyboard clicked loudly under his fingers. He bypassed the login screen using his original university encryption key, which the system accepted instantly with an affirmative chime.
Files cascaded across the amber monitors. Records dating back to 1994 appeared on screen: *SUBJECT 0: JULIAN MERCER (PROTOTYPE A)*.
"Prototype A?" Vanessa gasped, leaning over his shoulder. "Julian, you were born in 1999."
"I was," Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy whisper. "Which means I wasn't the first Julian."
A hidden speaker in the ceiling crackled to life, emitting a sharp burst of static before settling into a voice that sounded horrifyingly similar to Julian's own, though layered with an older, worn rasp.
"You took your time getting here, little brother," the voice echoed through the amphitheater. "I was beginning to think David had finally managed to drown you."
Eleanor raised her weapon toward the dark upper mezzanine. "Show yourself! Who are you?"
From the shadows above the control room, a figure stepped onto the steel catwalk. He wore a patched tactical uniform bearing the faded insignia of the original Meridian Dynamics research group. His face, illuminated by the amber glow of the screens below, was an exact duplicate of Julian's—except for a jagged, deep burn scar running from his left temple down to his collarbone, and eyes clouded with an unnatural, silver-tinted ocular implant.

"I am the Julian who stayed in the dark," the man said quietly. "The Julian who didn't get to go to graduation."
