Chapter 18 - The Fall of Marcus Sterling

On the screen, behind Marcus Sterling, the heavy oak doors of his Park Avenue office burst open.

A tactical entry team from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by heavily armed U.S. Marshals, flooded the room.

*“Marcus Sterling! Keep your hands where we can see them! Step away from the desk!”*

Sterling stood up, his chair tumbling backward. He reached toward the console to cut the feed, but an agent tackled him across the desk, sending monitors, crystal decanters, and papers flying across the room. Within seconds, Sterling was pinned to his own Persian rug, his hands twisted behind his back, the sharp sound of handcuffs locking in place broadcasting clearly through Meridian’s boardroom speakers.

The lead federal investigator looked up into the webcam, recognized Vance, and gave a sharp, professional nod before cutting the feed.

The screen went black.

A heavy silence settled over the Meridian boardroom.

Then, one by one, the board members began to applaud. It started with an older venture capitalist at the far end of the table, then spread until the entire room stood in a standing ovation.

They weren't applauding Vance.

Every set of eyes was fixed on Julian Mercer.

A twenty-two-year-old kid who had arrived at Meridian thirty-six hours earlier with nothing but a torn piece of paper, a battered backpack, and an intellect that had just brought down one of the most ruthless predatory syndicates on Wall Street.

Vance turned to Julian, placing a heavy hand on his shoulder. "Ladies and gentlemen of the board, I would like to formally introduce you to Meridian’s new Chief Technology Architect and Executive Vice President of Security Systems. Julian Mercer."

The board members cheered, nodding their approval, their faces gleaming with the realization that their stock value had just doubled overnight.

Julian shook their hands one by one, but his heart remained cold, focused, and steady. He knew this was only the first battle. In the corporate stratosphere, when one titan falls, the vacuum pulls in monsters far more dangerous than Marcus Sterling.
