Chapter 36 - The Second Betrayal of Arthur Vance

Before Valen could steady his aim, a sudden, wet sound echoed from the bloody grating ten feet away.

Arthur Vance was not dead.

The CEO, dragging his shattered body through his own blood, had reached the manual maintenance override under the command desk. With his dying strength, Vance drove an emergency safety crowbar into the primary conduit leading to the floor’s pneumatic drainage locks.

"Neither of you... get it," Vance choked out, blood pouring from his mouth as he pulled the emergency release downward with the full weight of his dying frame. "The syndicate... doesn't... leave witnesses..."

The floor beneath them groaned.

A series of explosive decompression bolts sheared off around the perimeter of the room. The spherical chamber was not merely an underground bunker; it was an extraction capsule designed to be jettisoned into the flooded sub-aquifer beneath the city in the event of an existential audit.

Valen’s head whipped toward Vance. The impostor fired two more rounds into the executive’s chest, but the mechanical lever had already locked into the emergency purge position.

"Warning," an automated female voice chimed through the overhead klaxons, entirely indifferent to the chaos below. "Sub-Level 60 structural separation initiated. Hydraulic ballast purge in sixty seconds. Surface egress locked. Quarantine seal active."

The room tilted violently.

Julian lost his footing as the floor pitched at a fifteen-degree angle. He slid toward the outer drainage trench, his fingers desperately finding purchase on an exposed conduit pipe. Valen, heavier and denser due to his reinforced endoskeleton, stumbled backward, his boots sliding against the slick, blood-stained metal grating.

"Julian!"

The voice came from above. Julian looked up through the smoke toward the mezzanine observation deck.

Vanessa was there. She had smashed through the reinforced observation window with an emergency fire axe, her hands bleeding from glass cuts. She was leaning over the shattered railing, throwing down a braided high-tensile safety tether.

"Grab it!" she screamed over the wail of the sirens. "Julian, the whole floor is dropping into the sewer basin! Grab the damn line!"

Julian looked at the tether swaying five feet from his position. Then he looked at Valen, who was fighting through his own neurological seizure, his synthetic skin peeling back from his jaw as he dragged himself up the inclined floor toward the Chimera core’s central crystalline drive.

If that drive fell into the aquifer with Valen, the syndicate would retrieve it within hours. The world would be blind, the sovereign financial network would fall under the syndicate's complete dominion, and his father’s legacy would be forever chained to a machine of total subjugation.

"Julian, now!" Vanessa shrieked. "Mom’s downstairs with the extraction van! We have to go!"

"Mom?" Julian echoed, his mind sharpening with sudden, glacial clarity. "She's downstairs?"

"She has the clearance codes for the perimeter gate!" Vanessa yelled. "Leave the drive! It doesn't matter anymore!"

Julian looked at his sister. He saw the desperate fear in her eyes—but beneath the fear, he saw the same calculating hunger that had been there on the university lawn. They didn't want him to destroy the core. They wanted to extract *him* because *he* was the only one who could decrypt the drive once they got away from Valen.

He was still their golden ticket. He was still the prize to be traded.

"It matters to me," Julian said.

Instead of lunging for the tether, Julian kicked off the conduit pipe, throwing himself directly into the tilted center of the room toward the primary crystalline drive.
