Chapter 91 - The Zero Protocol

The pursuit through the maintenance tunnel of the Large Hadron Collider was a nightmare of screaming sirens, flashing crimson emergency lights, and arctic gusts of leaking helium.

Julian and Vanessa ran side by side along the concrete catwalk parallel to the massive blue magnets of the accelerator. Behind them, the sounds of gunfire echoed as Colonel Brandt’s surviving loyalists engaged in a chaotic firefight with European security forces who had finally breached Access Shaft 4.

Ahead of them, two hundred yards down the curving tube, Valerie’s silhouette stumbled along the iron grating. She was bleeding from her ears, her movements erratic, driven forward only by adrenaline and the dying embers of her synthetic lattice.

"Valerie! Stop!" Julian’s voice echoed through the metal conduit, competing with the rising hum of the accelerator's magnetic coils. The air tasted of ozone and static; the beamline was charging, preparing for an automated beam dump to prevent a catastrophic thermal quench. "The core will vaporize! You won't survive the radiation!"

Valerie reached the primary junction—a massive steel platform overlooking the heavy lead shielding of the beam collision chamber. Below her, through armored quartz observation ports, a blinding ribbon of high-energy particles tore through the vacuum pipe at 99.99% the speed of light.

She turned to face them, her back against the railing, clutching the black core against her chest like an infant. Her immaculate suit was torn, drenched in hydraulic oil and frostbite blisters.

"You never understood what father made us for, Julian," she whispered, her voice amplified by the acoustics of the tunnel. "We weren't meant to live in their world. We were meant to be the firewall that burns it clean so something better can take root."

"There is nothing better on the other side of an ash heap!" Vanessa shouted, stepping beside Julian, her weapon raised. "Put the core down!"

Valerie looked at Vanessa, then at Julian. For a fleeting instant, the cold malice vanished from her eyes, replaced by a terrifying, hollow sorrow—the sorrow of an entity that realized it was engineered for a war that had no victors.

"The protocol isn't called Chimera anymore, brother," Valerie said softly, her thumb hovering over an emergency manual release valve directly above the particle beam's vacuum envelope. "It's called Zero."

She smiled, a bloody, fractured grin.

"Tell mother... she made the wrong twin survive."

Valerie pulled the release valve.

The heavy steel interlock slammed open with a concussive boom. The vacuum envelope shattered. The howling vortex of atmospheric air rushed into the multi-tera-electron-volt proton stream, and an unbearable, blinding flash of pure ultraviolet light erupted from the aperture, engulfing Valerie, the Sovereign Core, and the platform in an expanding sphere of silent, disintegrating fire.

The shockwave hit Julian and Vanessa like a freight train, tearing their feet from the catwalk and launching them into the howling blackness of the subterranean void.

As the world dissolved into pure white noise, Julian’s retinas burned with a single, final automated system message projected from the dying core directly into his synthetic optic nerves:
